If it starts after sitting for less than a minute it could be floats not adjusted, especially if it does not die under light driving but does using more throttle. But if it has to set for a while to “cool down”, possibly the coil and an earlier response is right. Put a light on it or hook up a spare grounded plug and check the spark. Newbie here. I have an 86 225. Bought it a couple of months ago. Runs great. Today I used it for spraying. Drove it in 1st low and putted around. Then I tried to put it in second and it would not shift. But I could shift it to neutral but it stayed there. No upshift. Had issues moving the dual range shifter. Walked away and came back later and wiggled the range finder and got it to shift. Sprayed another tank this time in high first. This time I can’t shift up or fully into neutral. When I find the issue I will post. Oil and filter are fresh and like you starting and running did not change a thing.
