help diagnosing starting issue 01 Sportsman 500
fireslayer replied to Sonders's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
Just a heads up on something that has got me in the past on these.....Make sure the kill switch up on the left handlebar in ON as it seems like it kills the start circuit on this model also. If you are getting a click when you hit the start switch then this probably isn't the problem though. The clicking is the solenoid engaging but if it has a bad contact inside of it, it may not be sending voltage/current on to the starter. If not then the solenoid itself, or the connections at the solenoid or starter are bad. -

Need help!!! 1997 Suzuki King Quad No Start

Spock58 is correct. Pulse fuel pumps aren't capable of producing too mush pressure. You most likely have some debris between the float needle and seat is the carb. or the float needle is out of place, or the float or needle are sticking or stuck for some reason. A quick inspection and cleaning will probably solve the problem. You can retest it like Spock58 says before reinstalling it as well to see if you have the problem resolved. make sure the float bowl gets completely full and fuel and the tube is staying full also. A small auxillary fuel tank might be helpful here as well. -
Yeah, at the price difference there would about have to be some quality issues at best. thanks for the reply Mech. Good info.

Anyone ever use or have any experience with aftermarket carbs, specifically one for the 500 Vinsons? Just ordered one off Amazon. Gonna give it a try. 47.00 bucks vs 600.00+ for OEM. Any thoughts or previous experiences? thanks, Fireslayer.

Check the drain plug in the bttom of the engine case. they are bad to work loose or even fall out. Causes an air leak and lean condition, fast idle, hard stating etc.
-
Possible that the exhaust is plugged up or restricted some way?

Make to run oil with high zinc and phosphorous ZDDP, in the engines. Lots of oils these days have very low zinc and phosphorous content which causes cam wear in these engines. -

Make sure your kill switch on the handlebar is in the RUN?ON position. -
If it's too pitted or worn, just replace the float needle and seat. they do get worn to the point that no amount of cleaning will stop them from leaking too.

Lobe worn flat on the cam. these models had issues with that. New cam and lifters and start running oil with as high zinc/phosphorous content or add ZDDP additive to your oil. -
How many miles on belt?

Yep, sounds like a clutch issue instead of a belt issue. May have something worn, broke sticking etc and not allowing it to contact the belt properly. -
It's a 2 stroke . They make a lotta noise. LOL

Do these have drains in the crankcase below the crankshaft? If so, it could be loose or missing allowing air into the crankcase and causing lean condition and hard? no start issues.
