What is the reason they started with the Thumb Style throttle.

I have a 1999 KLF300 4x2 that I just purchased. I am still getting it to where it needs to be but I have come up to something that I haven't been able to improve. Cold starting takes a very long time and occasionally will sound like it is getting too much fuel. Once started it runs great. I don't see any way to adjust the air fuel mixture or any adjustments at all on the carb except the idle set screw. Any recommendations or where to look. Thank you Kris
