1998 arctic cat 500 starts and runs fine for 20 minutes then idles very fast with slight backfire. Had this symptom the first six times but now the last two times it runs fine for 20 minutes then just runs rough and stalls. If you try to keep it running with some throttle it backfires bad. I have sprayed carb cleaner around engine and carb with no effect. Could it be electrical? stator? cdi box?

Carb has been rebuilt and then taken apart and looked at again. With hunting season right around the corner I think some oldfashion parts swaping is next. Anyone know of an atv salvage yard that might have arctic cat electrical parts?

Stator's usually don't act-up. They either work or they don't. However, the flywheels of that erea had glue on magnetics and over time the glue will release and the magnetic will move around on the flywheel.

This can be verified with a stator voltage out put test and a trigger test. But they are also usually not intermitant.

Coils can be effected by heat, a break in the windings that is closed when cool and opens when hot.

The first thing I would check is all the battery and engine grounds. Make sure there clean a tight. Make sure the main and aux fuses are clean and there plug-in are clean. Also check where thers harness connects to the start solinod. these is where the system draws power.

I had come to the conclusion that my trouble was electrical so after checking/cleaning every connection I could find like had been suggested and testing as many electrical components as I could with still the same symptoms I went ahead and changed the cdi module and now it is back on the trail.

Happy you found you problem, The CDI is the one thing that there is no real trouble shooting for. If you trouble shoot everything else and the all test good then it time to try a CDI.

Sence it appears your CDI was bad I do recommend you replace the voltage regulator. The CDI are solid state units with no moving parts and the only thing that damages them is voltage spikes.

The Stator put out 60 volt ac and the voltage regulator converts it to 14 to 16 volts dc. if it is internally shorted it can pass ac voltage to the CDI and damage it

In search of my first ATV? What are good older 4x4 models?

So I decided to pick up a small trailer if I could get one for the right price.  I found this one for a few hundred bucks on Craig’s list.  It is  a galvanized trailer which is exactly what I was looking for. The wood was shot and needed some minor repairs which I could care less about as long as the chassis was good.
I striped it down and put a new deck on. I had some vinyl realtree graphics that I had laying around so I added them to the fenders which I think worked out well. Very happy with this little guy.
I'm having the iron workers at my jobmake me up a few lightweight side rails that will have a 22 degree bend in them to accommodate the tires that slightly hang over the edge and will incorporate some tie down points as well.

      Hello All
I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

I bought a 1996 Sportsman 500 4x4 about a month ago, and I love it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a few problems with the high-range gear. The first problem is that the gear selector will intermittently pop out of high and into neutral. This problem will sometimes occur when starting from a stop and sometimes will also occur while at cruising speed. The last time this happened I stopped and put it back into gear, however, as soon as I tried to throttle the machine would die. I turned it on again with no problems put it back into high and it died again. Once again I turned it on with no problems put it into low instead and it worked fine with no problem. I drove in low down the road slowly for a little and then shifted back into high with no issues.
I plan on working on it this weekend and would just like some opinions or feedback from anyone who may have experienced these problems before. I'm very mechanically inclined but im unsure of exactly where to start as this is the first Polaris ATV that I've owned. Any feedback is appreciated and thanks in advance
