The drive belt pulley has been grinding against the belt housing for quite some time (long time). I was able to adjust the bracket at the bottom of the housing to keep it from grinding under normal operation but under high torque conditions it grinds and especially during shutdown of the engine. I have been unable to find a spot in the adjustments that works for all operation. Has anyone else dealt with this? I am thinking that there might be something amiss in the engine mounts or something. Any help would be appreciated!

Mike, thanks for the response. The belt has very little time on it and is in good shape. You can see where the drive pulley is hitting the housing and causing the grinding noise. I can loosen the alignment bracket underneath the housing and it will cause the pulley to hit the housing continously. I bought the sportsman new in Oct 98 and have just under a 1000 hrs on it with virtually no trouble other than a couple electrical issues and this issue which I just have put up with over the last few years. it is mostly annoying and does not cause any performance issues. Still runs like a champ!

I see allot of the belt covers shrink with age or after getting hot you might pull it off and heat it up where its rubbin with a heat gun I use a spoon lookin tool to push it back out. sometimes its to far gone and has to be replaced they are about 120.00 new.... In search of my first ATV? What are good older 4x4 models?

I hadn't driven my Kodiak for a two months, and since it was low on fuel, the first thing I did was filled it up to maybe 7/8 full. Getting ready to start it, I rotated the fuel selector switch to "on" and within seconds I smelled and saw fuel dripping onto the floor. I quickly turned it off and the fuel gradually stopped - I can repeat this.
The fuel is flowing from the hose that is connected to the bottom of the carb, and routes around to the left side toward the wheel well. Any idea what's going on here? It ran fine the last time I had it out.
      Thanks...

Which is more reliable? Shaft or chain drive?

I bought a 1996 Sportsman 500 4x4 about a month ago, and I love it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a few problems with the high-range gear. The first problem is that the gear selector will intermittently pop out of high and into neutral. This problem will sometimes occur when starting from a stop and sometimes will also occur while at cruising speed. The last time this happened I stopped and put it back into gear, however, as soon as I tried to throttle the machine would die. I turned it on again with no problems put it back into high and it died again. Once again I turned it on with no problems put it into low instead and it worked fine with no problem. I drove in low down the road slowly for a little and then shifted back into high with no issues.
I plan on working on it this weekend and would just like some opinions or feedback from anyone who may have experienced these problems before. I'm very mechanically inclined but im unsure of exactly where to start as this is the first Polaris ATV that I've owned. Any feedback is appreciated and thanks in advance
