I have a 1999 KQ300 thats been sitting for about 3+ years while I've been away at school. So in the last couple weeks I've been trying to get it running again for a local event called mudfest. I dropped in a new battery, pulled the carb out and cleaned it up a little, changed the fluids and put in a new plug. After all was said and done, the bike runs, but not quite at 100%. I had it going this whole weekend and it never completely quit on me, but it will not idle, and I cannot take the choke all the way off other wise it starts to misfire. I'm a fairly competent mechanic, but I'm not too familiar with this bike, so I was wondering if anyone knew of some if the more common issues with these bikes. I read through some of the other posts on this forum, and tried a few of the suggestions, but it still is running a little rough.

Oh, and for what its worth, when I first started to mess with the bike, I noticed there was some sort of fluid all over the head of the motor, it looked more like oil but Im not absolutely sure.

Thanks in advance

So it will probably just be worth picking up a rebuild kit for the carb. On that note, I tried to pull the carb once before, but I could not figure out how to detach the throttle cable from the side of the carb, which is why I couldn't completely clean it out. Anyone have any insight into how to detach it? Its not like the typical slide out cable thats in a throttle body.

I would think that the carb just needs to be cleaned better, you need to get the thing all the way off, and take it COMPLETELY apart, and clean EVERY hole, jet and passage. I would also look in the gas tank and make sure there isn't any debris in there either. Wouldn't hurt to make sure the petcock is clean too. One other thing I would do is check the valve lash. Now, concerning that throttle cable you are having trouble with. There should be a plasic cover on the side of the carb that covers the throttle linkage. If you take that cover off, you should be able to roll the lingage up to the point where you can slip the cable out of its hole. You should be able to see the throttle cable going into the carb just above the side cover. Good luck.

do the stuff dirtdemon said. there is a cover on the right side of the carb you need to take it off, be-aware on the o-ring gasket. then you need to open the throttle by hand on the carb to take the throttle line out. you also need to remove the choke cable on the left side with a 11mm wrench, remeber were the fuel /vacuum hoses go. now you can start taking it out, this is the hard part since the carb is very tight in between the engine and air box. i recommend sliding the hose clamps off and taking the airbox hose out first. the hard part is putting is back in. once you clean the carb and all the jets, with a needle and a compressor is the best way. the idle screw for the king 300 is 2 5/8 turns out from all the way in. the hard part is putting is back in.

Thanks for the replies guys, turns out it was the low speed jet was clogged, had a tiny speck of dirt in it. The passage was so small I couldn't even fit a sewing needle through it, but I took think piece of copper wire and fed it through. The bike is running like a champ now. Next project: Get the QR250 running :)

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

Troubleshooting a no spark issue, was running OK, maybe a little rich, turned it off, now no spark. I've checked/ohmed out the main key switch, the start/stop switch, neutral switch, brake switch - all good. It will crank the starter, but no spark with the starter or when I try the pull start. I've checked all fuses and diodes. Swapped battery. New plug. New coil. Swapped in a used CDI - no help. Traced, removed, cleaned, reattached all grounds. Removed things like my winch from the circuits to be sure a bad relay or something was dragging it down. When testing voltages, the orange wire going from the CDI to the ignition coil shows no/very low voltage-shouldn't it have 12V on it? Sometimes I get a very weak, intermittent glow on my spark tester, but not enough to fire the plug. I've checked continuity on just about all wires in the harness. Checked/cleaned/lubed w dielectric grease- all connections, redid a few that looked old/dirty. I've checked the stator resistances, all good, but have a stator and rectifier ordered anyway, will arrive Sunday. I verified that the rectifier has a voltage output back to charge the battery while cranking - 10.5-11V, low, but expected while starter is engaged. What else can I check as part of troubleshooting? I have a Haines service manual, but the 1999 350 4x4 seems to be an odd model, there isn't an exact electrical diagram for it, but found one for another year that has all the same number of wires and same color wires, so I've referenced that. Any hints, tips or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

My name says it all. I have a '03 Honda Sporttrax 400EX with a new aftermarket carb on it that seems to be having issues. I can start it but it idles really rough and when I give it throttle it just kills the engine. I have tried adjusting the idle screw but to no avail. I am in the San Diego Ca area.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I would also like to get an owners manual for the thing too but can't seem to find a downloadable one.

So I’ve got a 2000 Honda 400ex absolutely love it!! I’ve had it for about a month, I ride with bruteforce 750’s, outlander 850’s and 1000 sxs’s and I was thinking of getting a trx450r carb and a full hmf exhaust. And probably doing the air box mod too, how much power would this give my 400? Just a little different or a big difference? Cuz if it’s not much of a different I’ll just stick with my dg slip on..... thanks!
