So my Lakota Sport isn't running right. It starts and idles fine but gags out (doesn't die) when I hit the throttle unless I go super slow and once I get to the high revs I can play with the throttle all i want. I have so far; put in new gas, cleaned air filter, cleaned carb, changed spark plug, adjusted throttle cable, valves were adjusted about a year ago with only a couple rides on it. Any ideas?

When you cleaned the carb, didi you find any gummed fuel or debris? Did you blow out ALL passages and vents with compressed air? It sounds like you may have something stuck in your pilot jet, or maybe the fuel screw needs adjustment. Wouldn't hurt to check compression and timing chain/tensioner.

I just found the carb had a little dirt in it the first time. So I took the carb apart again and used air and double checked this time to make sure jets were clear. Now it barely idles for a short time and I can't give it any gas cause it dies out. Fisrt thing I would check is the fuel screw adjustment, you may have screwed it in all the way when you put the carb back together. It really sounds like you aren't getting enough fuel, if the fuel screw doesn't help, check the float, float pin and seat.

You have to bare with me cause I am no mechanic. If your talking about the screw to adjust the feul/idle speed I did play with that and there is only one spot were the bike with start and barely idles, if I try and increase or decrease the flow it just dies. The float in the carb doesn't have much movement so it barely moves the float valve(normal? I can't see a way to change that).

I guess now that I think about that, I was moving the float with the carb upside down so i can see it having more valve movement when its flipped over. Im lost! :willy_nillyc:

The pilot screw is part # 16014 on the diagram, it looks like it would be located on the bottom of the carb, just in front of the float bowl. The hand screw that adjusts the idle is different. The pilot screw should be turned out a bit, contact a Kawasaki dealer tech or consult a manual to find out exactly how far. I would guess that it should be about 1 1/2 to 2 turns out. Did you check to see if the diaphragm is in good shape?

The float should move freely quite a bit. The float valve should move a good 1/4" or so. If it doesn't move enough, the pin that holds the float in place could be bent, there might be something obstructing the movement of the float or you could maybe even have the float in upside down. I took some pictures of the float on an old Kehin carb I have lying around. The float and bowl on this carb may be a bit larger than yours, but this should still give you a general idea of how much movement you should have on the float and pin. The float will actually roll up and pull the pin out of the seat hole if the float body didn't hit the plastic buffer plate.

Thanks for helping DD. So I played with the adjustment on the Pilot, now it idles better but I still can not give it gas or it dies. The diaphram looks good, The float is in correctly. So here are some pics of the carb and shows the float movement, maybe this will help.

Every thing does look clean and in order there. I see that the float is in correctly, but have you checked the adjustment? Do you have a fuel filter on the machine? If you do, try removing it and see if there is any improvement. Another tip, if you get into your carb alot, the phillips head screws get stripped easily. I like to replace them with socket cap hex screws. They are much easier to deal with since it is easier to get an allen wrench in there with the carb still on and they don't strip like phillips heads do.

Problem solved! So it was not a throttle or carb or gas problem. The battery went bad and would't hold a charge about two years ago and I have just been using the pull start and that worked fine for me. Every time I worked on the bike it just kept getting harder to start and today I was to tired to keep yanking on the pull start so I hooked it up to a battery charger on start assist. It fired right up and runs like a champ. I guess the battery deteriorated enough and the bike doesn't create enough charge it self. So new battery and no more problem. :) I tell you what, I have one clean carb now.

Good to hear you got it running good again. Keep an eye on the battery though, if you were having trouble before at low engine speeds, that could be an indication that your stator is on it's way out. Once the machine is running, it should run off the stator, the battery should have no effect on performance unless the stator is not producing enough power at low engine speeds, or you had a bad connection somewhere. I would check the output from the stator at an idle just to make sure. If it was just a bad connection that was incidentally fixed when you replaced the battery, then everything should be fine.

      Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

      I've been trying to piece this Lakota 300 back together, slowly. It's been a rabbit hole however. I replace one thing, then it leads to replacing other things. Anyway, When I got this thing I noticed that the hose coming off the camshaft cover wasn't attached to anything, it was just hanging loose. (It's literally just a foot long hose attached to nothing) I figured since it was venting the head it would be ok and I am sure it is.
      However, last night I was looking at the service manual and noticed that it mentioned that this atv has a crankcase breather tube as well. Mine does not have one, so I looked at Partzilla and looked at the parts diagram and sure enough, it's definitely supposed to have one. The problem however is, the service manual does not show how it hooks up and the parts diagram only shows the exploded view of the assembly. I just find that kind of strange, nowhere in the manual does it show how it connects. Does it have it connector, attach to a nipple? It just doesn't say and it bothers me that there is a hole there without anything attached to it.  If anyone has a Bayou 300 or Lakota 300 with an intact breather vent system and could possibly take some clear photos of it or know how it connects I would be very grateful. I have searched high and low and cannot find any information on it.

      If anyone is having issues with the Mikuni VM24SS carb, I thought I would post what issues I had and how I resolved them.
      Acquired a 93 Bayou 220 that had sat for over 4 years.
      The carb was extremely corroded and pitted and full of leftover fuel.
      Cleaned carb and bowl and was able to get the engine to start.
      Within 30 seconds exhaust would heat up and start to glow red hot.
      Removed carb and recleaned everything, including a second overnight soak.
      Needless to say, after removing the carb for the 5th time and my frustration to the limit I
      realized that my attention had been to the carb body and not to the bowl.
      There is a small brass rod on the bottom of the carb that goes down into the float bowl but is seperated from the main section. I had cleaned that area very well....I had thought.
      ***The corrosion had sealed off the channel that runs from the main bowl section to the small tube section on the side of the float bowl. No amount of carb cleaner was going to get it to budge. So i took a small nail and started to scrape away the corrosion and was eventually able to dislodge enought of the corrosion that carb cleaner would flow through that channel. ***
      I thoroughly cleaned each side of the channel in the float bowl and reinstalled the carb and now the issue of it running lean is gone.
      On a second note the fuel mixture screw was a nightmare to remove as the threads had been corroded and wouldnt let the screw come out. I used a little cutting oil and worked the mixture screw in and out until I was able to push past the corroded threads and completely remove the needle. After a couple passes with a tap to clean the threads it is like new again.
      Hope this helps if you are having a lean running machine.

      Hello all! I’m new to the 4 wheeler world, but not new to the mechanic world. I was a diesel mechanic for many years and last year got into jet skis. I just bought a 1987 Yamaha moto 4 350 and now learning the ins and outs of 2 stroke engines. Looking forward to learning all the things.
