i just traded out a garden tractor for this 400 atv ,lady has not rode it since last march, and could not get it to idle down to put it in gear, i talked to my atv wannabe specialist, he says no big deal,we can fix it.that was two weeks ago. so far i have drained the tank, and cleaned.w/new gas it will only start w/full choke or 1/2 choke,no matter how cold the motor is,or how warm it is. took the carb apart, and cleaned it good, blew out all openings, and checked the floats to make sure they were riding good. back together. started it and same problem, had my son hold the engine speed as even as possible. i sprayed carb cleaner around carb, and found that by the oil inj. fitn. it seemed to rev higher, tried to just barly snug this 10mm fitting and it seemed like it wanted to slip around, tried to loosen , and that worked just fine, but when i try to sung it, it seems to slip, could this be my big problem, and is there an easy fix or buy a new reed body, thanks,rusobr2 ( steven )

Please provide the make and model of the machine, I am assuming it is a Polaris two stroke. It definately sounds like an air leak. This will cause the high idle because you are getting too much air. It will also cause hard starting because you are sucking air in through the leaky fitting, which reduces the draw through the carb and thus it has a harder time pulling fuel up through the jets. Also, something that is commonly overlooked when cleaning a carb is the float bowl vent. It is a long thin brass tube that protrudes upward into the top of the float bowl above the fuel level and vents through the bottom of the float bowl. Make sure that vent is clean, blowing compressed air through the holes should make sure it is clear.

really !! i do appreciate the help- the idle problem -is that it won't idle, and if i try to set the carb cable high enough to make it run,so i can try to figure it out,it will only run high for about a 1/2 minute then it wants to die.so then i choke it a little to get it going again ,and once again try to figure it out .when i spray:no: a little carb cleaner around the oil banjo fitting it seems like it wants to run higher, but i can't find anything wrong with this fitting, tomorrow i will check the vent tube in bowl that you referred to. thanks, steven

Once again, please post the MAKE and MODEL of your atv, it will help us greatly to know exactly what you have. Check your float adjustment too, it sounds like you may be running the float bowl out of fuel. Make sure the tank vent is not blocked off. Also, you have dry stator(not surrounded by oil) then try spraying the carb cleaner around the crank seal there. Once again, an air leak can cause the draw through the carb to be insufficient to pull enough fuel through the jets, causing the bike have idle problems.

I had a very similar problem on a 250 2 stroke polaris. Polaris puts drain plugs in the case at the bottom. Turns out on mine either someone had taken it out or it fell out. This put a straight hole right into the case. It gathered oil at the front of the engine on the frame as well and would only run on choke. Put in a new plug and seal for about 4 bucks and it ran perfect. Worth a look.

:yes::yes::yes:FELLAS!! FELLAS!!-i now have the 94 polaris repaired--WA-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-i had a close friend come over after i was at my wits ends-he asked what all i have done. i explained to him all of the suggestions that i had received from this board. he started it and checked the carb-i told him i already cleaned the carb(to the best of my ability)he said it dos'nt seem like the LOW SPEED JET is open,i kinda scratched my head , and told him i think i cleaned everything-when he got it apart,he said he needed a small screw driver to get the jet out,so i handed him the one i used,he said smaller.so i went to my grinder and made it smaller-i didn't know this jet was in there-pulled it out and used my smallest tip cleaner from my torch--poked a hole in it and it fired right up,and set their an idoled, i just about pooped my knickers,he says jeeeeez man you already did everything else, and i'm not gonna charge you for poking one little hole.FELLAS, i was just about ready to pull the spark plug out and hang on to it ,so when i got me a new ATV at least i'd have a new plug for it. in this case its the little things that count-MANY THANKS to all ,and the support, damn thing sure is fun, thanks again, steven

Good to hear you got her fixed, there are many parts inside the carb that can be clogged with debris or gummed up fuel. That is so important to make sure to take apart everything you possibly can and clean it. But I guess you know that now. Glad to hear you are having fun on it.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

So we are almost a month into winter and I've been so busy working on my house that up until today, I didn't realize that we just haven;t gotten any real snow yet to warrant putting the plow on my grizzly. So that got me thinking, what are the latest plows out there and what ATV plows are the best? I've got 2 snow plows for my grizzly, a quadboss pile driver atv plow set up and a snowsport ATV plow. They are both a bit dated now and I tend to stick with the snowsport due to ease of use and I just like it so much. So if you have a plow on your ATV, please let us know what it is and post a picture with your atv/plow would be awesome. Would also like to know what you like and dislike about it.
This is back a while when I did a write up on these 2 plows.... in 2009 I got the snowsport and in 2012 I got the quadboss.

I have a Sportsman 450 HO and almost killed my self when loading it on my truck with ramps.  It rolled off the top of the ramps and tailgate and nearly landed on me.  I now want to winch the ATV in to the truck.  My question is are the front side bed tiedowns in my 2011 RAM strong enough to winch to without distorting the hooks or sides of the bed?
