Hi, I'm a new member

Just bought a used 08 350 raptor with about 5 hours on it ( very clean ). Started fine when we got it. Now after a few mods (bumper, skid plates, air filter) Now will not start unless you pull in the clutch. I've checked just about everything and also checked that there is no pinched wires. Anybody have any ideas?:bangheadc: Thanks, Dave

I would just go over my steps and make sue you did not poinch anyting or disconnect something. Do you have power in the on position? Is it a matter of the starter just not cranking or is there no power to the bike at all?

Any engine mods?

Hi, ATV

There are not any engine mods. With the key switch on push the start switch and nothing. but if you pull in the clutch ( like if you are in gear) the bike starts right up. I have taken all the plastic off to check the wiring and plugs and everything is fine. The lights all work fine headlight hi/lo, rear tail light running light/brake light, reverse light, kill switch all work fine. battery is new w/full charge. Everything works normal except to start the bike you have to pull in the clutch. Thanks Dave

Hey, Thanks for the help. Why didn't I think of that.

This quad is not for me to ride, but for all the friends that ride with us and there girlfriends and kids. Just want the bike to start right so no one gets hurt.

Isn't that a safety feature? Are you saying that you have to hold the clutch in then you press the start button and the starter works?

It sounds to me like your bike has no way of recognizing neutral, therefore you may have a bad Neutral relay or Neutral switch.

Posted

If that's the case, then AJMBOY is correct. I misunderstood exactly what was going on. Here are some suggestions:

To test:

Neutral Switch

Locate the sky blue colored wire on the left side of the frame. Disconnect the bullet connector. Touch the positive probe to the sky blue wire and touch the negative probe to an engine ground. The switch should have continuity in neutral and no continuity when in gear.

Neutral Relay

For some reason Yamaha labels this the starting circuit cut-off relay on the Raptor models. On the other models it is labeled correctly. Unplug the 4-pin connector from neutral relay. Jump a positive battery lead to the brown wire terminal and the negative lead to the green/white wire. Touch the positive probe to the white/black wire terminal and the negative probe to the sky blue wire terminal. There should be continuity when the battery is jumped correctly, and no continuity when the battery is disconnected.

Some images attached, of the relay and wire to switch, to help you....

My last 2 races a Suzi has handed me my nuts. I finished the race and he was already out of his riding gear.

If it makes you feel any better, my Honda will beat the pants off my Suzuki, granted no one else will ride my Honda, so I don't know what would happen if we switched bikes and I rode the LTR, but I am sure the results would be similar, go Honda!

Anyway, I agree with the neutral safety switch idea, should be an easy fix, or it is not a big deal if you don't fix it. My "suckie" as you call it, won't start unless I pull in the clutch either, but mine was made that way. By the way, I love my "suckie" and I bet it is faster than your Warrior in Raptor clothes.:slap::laugh:

Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings about my stupid remark (suckie), I didn't mean to be a jerk. I was just looking for an answer to my question. I have been riding for over 40 years and just care about the other people riding this quad so nobody gets hurt. This is an extra bike for all to ride and enjoy. I have ridden most of the brands ( Blue,Red,Green, and yellow) and the best one is the one you are sitting on and enjoying on any given weekend, so enjoy what you ride.

ATV Mechanic didn't get to look at the quad tonight maybe tomorrow, thanks for the info. Dave

My machine is faster than his but he is a better rider. Any other racing events he races pro class. In these races he races in the Open ATV under 39.

No need to be sorry, we all give each other a hard time. As long as you don't get personal it should be all good.

Just try to keep the ball bustin family friendly

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

So we are almost a month into winter and I've been so busy working on my house that up until today, I didn't realize that we just haven;t gotten any real snow yet to warrant putting the plow on my grizzly. So that got me thinking, what are the latest plows out there and what ATV plows are the best? I've got 2 snow plows for my grizzly, a quadboss pile driver atv plow set up and a snowsport ATV plow. They are both a bit dated now and I tend to stick with the snowsport due to ease of use and I just like it so much. So if you have a plow on your ATV, please let us know what it is and post a picture with your atv/plow would be awesome. Would also like to know what you like and dislike about it.
This is back a while when I did a write up on these 2 plows.... in 2009 I got the snowsport and in 2012 I got the quadboss.

I have a Sportsman 450 HO and almost killed my self when loading it on my truck with ramps.  It rolled off the top of the ramps and tailgate and nearly landed on me.  I now want to winch the ATV in to the truck.  My question is are the front side bed tiedowns in my 2011 RAM strong enough to winch to without distorting the hooks or sides of the bed?
