Just got an 05 Yamaha bruin 250 and wondering if it would be worth fixing? Any suggestions would be great, any advise would be welcome as well, was told it just needed a carb clean and or replaced, when I pulled the fuel line off it looked like black syrup coming out of the line.

If carb is the only problem it would definately be worth fixing, the syrup means its been sitting for a very long time, i would clean up the fuel system tank and petcock of corse carb and go from there.

Sounds good,  it is in rough shape but free is free, just something to go back and forth from the club house to the fishing hole or hunting stand. Is there anything major I should pay attention to when pulling carb and peacock off? Haven’t had a chance to look it over yet they just dropped it off when I made post, I will look it over when I get off tomorrow when I have some light to look it over.

That sounds perfect for what you need and free, you will be surprized how good it will look with a little cleanup.

Loosen the clamp on the carb it will come right out of the boot. Take the cover off unhook the throttle cable and unscrew the enricher plunger(choke cable) upper left black plastic piece on 3rd photo. Petcock screws may be rusted or corroded take care not to strip them when taking off.

Don’t seem to hard, after looking it over, besides carb, noticed that the plastics are all tore up, cables are broken, no battery or key, and fuel tank smell like crap, front tires are gone, brake light broke, that’s just a start. Hopefully that is all, any suggestions on cleaning the tank

In my opinion,  fix it up its much more fun that way! Plus, these quads are super easy to work on. Parts are cheap too...well, mostly.

I'm building a Big Bear 250, I have a build thread on it. The bruin and big bears are basically the same machine!

It does sound bad. You have to ignore all that stuff for now, dont spend money on anything except getting the engine running to make sure that is good and that it shifts., before you proceed.

Cleaning the tank is fairly simple they are plastic depending on what comes out of it you might be able to just clean it out with soap or simple green if it real tarring looking use something like carb cleaner and wash it out with pressure washer.

#7 Excellent advise Gw. Get it running and check the gears and as much of the running gear as you can, even if it is up on blocks. You can put a small load on it, and test the brakes and driveshafts at the same time... by applying the brakes. If it has no wheels don't try changing gears at speed, let it stop and then change up. Jury rig a fuel tank if need be.

I agree completely 86cc there is some level of pride that goes with taking one from complete neglect and changing it into something useful that you dont get from driving one off the showroom floor. A lot of work involved but the learning expierience you get cannot be received any other way. Good luck with it and im behind you all the way. Keep us informed so we can help.

Haha..  It caught my eye.. It actually looks like I could edit it still.. Lots of sites you only get a short time to edit, like minutes sometimes.  Good site this.

I guess auto correct got it close lol, I pulled the carb off to clean it and rebuild it, wasn’t to bad of a task, I noticed on the the fuel line coming in it looked like syrup, but when I took the bottom off where the bloat is it was somewhat clean and dry, was full of what looked like seasonings you would put on food. Everything was dry and some what clean, all the little brass pieces in the carb I pulled out looked like they were all plugged up, ordered a carb rebuild kit for all balls racing. I have the housings cleaning in denatured alcohol in an ultra sonic cleaner. And the guy I got the quad from found the front tires and dropped them off yesterday, fixed and repaired the plastics with some zipper ties and plastic welder on what I could do.

Ok so when I pulled the carb off the rubber piece on the head fell apart, I have that ordered and on its way, the carb is in the ultrasonic awaiting the carb kit to get here, air filter looks good, oil looks good, will change it after I hear it run, turning the back tires I can shift it thru all the gears, it’s a pain in the butt to get in reverse, got a fresh battery in it, seems like all the electronics are working, lights, electric start, waiting for a new ignition switch with key so I can stop using a paper clip to test things. So far it is a fun little project.

Thats all great news. It always gratifying to see a project coming together. I have also had problems with the older yamahas going in and out of reverse. You might try the clutch adjustment sometimes that helps some.

Most bikes they use the gear shift lever to disengage the plate clutch during gear shifts to save the gears if the centrifugal clutch is locked up, but if reverse doesn't use the shift lever to move into reverse then that shift is entirely dependent on the centrifugal being unlocked to prevent graunching. I'd check the idle speed. If this bike does use the foot shift lever for reverse then yup, adjust the clutch.  Assuming that is the sort of problem it's having.. If it's just hard to move the lever/knob or some such, then check the interlock adjustment, and all the shift mechanism adjustments.

      Hello All
I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Troubleshooting a no spark issue, was running OK, maybe a little rich, turned it off, now no spark. I've checked/ohmed out the main key switch, the start/stop switch, neutral switch, brake switch - all good. It will crank the starter, but no spark with the starter or when I try the pull start. I've checked all fuses and diodes. Swapped battery. New plug. New coil. Swapped in a used CDI - no help. Traced, removed, cleaned, reattached all grounds. Removed things like my winch from the circuits to be sure a bad relay or something was dragging it down. When testing voltages, the orange wire going from the CDI to the ignition coil shows no/very low voltage-shouldn't it have 12V on it? Sometimes I get a very weak, intermittent glow on my spark tester, but not enough to fire the plug. I've checked continuity on just about all wires in the harness. Checked/cleaned/lubed w dielectric grease- all connections, redid a few that looked old/dirty. I've checked the stator resistances, all good, but have a stator and rectifier ordered anyway, will arrive Sunday. I verified that the rectifier has a voltage output back to charge the battery while cranking - 10.5-11V, low, but expected while starter is engaged. What else can I check as part of troubleshooting? I have a Haines service manual, but the 1999 350 4x4 seems to be an odd model, there isn't an exact electrical diagram for it, but found one for another year that has all the same number of wires and same color wires, so I've referenced that. Any hints, tips or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

My name says it all. I have a '03 Honda Sporttrax 400EX with a new aftermarket carb on it that seems to be having issues. I can start it but it idles really rough and when I give it throttle it just kills the engine. I have tried adjusting the idle screw but to no avail. I am in the San Diego Ca area.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I would also like to get an owners manual for the thing too but can't seem to find a downloadable one.
