Is this the one-way over-run clutch for engine braking ? That's called the clutch shoe nut in the book, and it's 101.5 lbft.

There's also the starter clutch, which is the generator rotor nut, and it's 115.5 lbft.

I wouldn't do either of those nuts up that tight though, not on an old bike. The nut might strip, the threads on the shaft might strip, and it's probably possible that either hub could get forced down on their taper or splines and cause problems.

I'd do them up carefully, to about 65-70.. It will be plenty as long as the stator is clean and sitting nicely on the taper.

Thanks for the clarification Mech, i have always done the secondary clutch at half the torque of the primary, i think the book i was reading listed the secondary at 44 ft pds and the primary at 80.

I'm trying to help a buddy out with his bike (he's not really on the internet or familiar with these forums) and I'll admit that I am not super familiar with the transmission and clutches in these bikes. I owned a Brute a few years ago, but never had an issue like this that I had to troubleshoot.
So basically my buddy bought a group lot of 650's to build one good bike out of. He got it all put together and has it running but when he pushes on the throttle the clutch doesn't engage till the RPM's are quite high and even when its moving it doesn't really speed up, almost seems like its in "limp mode". He's tried 2 different transmissions so I don't think that's the problem.
Is there any adjustment on the clutch engagement? Anything else I can tell him to look at? Let me know if you need anymore information if you think you can help.

I like to ride in wooded and grassy areas. It takes my mind off the everyday routines and helps me deal with my father's cancer. Also gives me a reason to get involved with forums like this one.

Well while I was waiting for new parts for the choke, I decided to adjust the clutch. When I removed the lock nut, I found the guy I bought it from or someone else had stripped the threads on the adjustment rod. I couldn’t get the adjustment rod to turn without putting a pair of channel locks on the screw driver, this was telling me something was wrong. So now the rod pushes in and out and spins freely too freely. So guess I’ll have to take the clutch housing off to see what’s going on and replace the adjustment rod, it’s threads are beyond repair, and there is something going on with the adjustment rod. If there’s another way please let me know. The further I go the worse it gets. Thanks for any help.
