How do I test the neutral switch on my 2000 Yamaha Big Bear 400 4X4?

When the power fails do you still have 12 v at your battery, you may need to load test your battery, it may show 12v on the battery but when a load is put on it, like the lights and starter it cant handle it. Also the Big Bear is fairly specific about the battery, it. needs what they say it needs, i put a weaker Amp Hr battery on mine when i first got it and it didnt like it one bit.

Here is the latest and the greatest. It came down to testing the CDI and it turned out to be the culprit. Now after looking at the ridiculous price that is wanted for one, I looked at some 2000-2001 Kodiak CDI's on Ebay that were only 20-30 dollars, so I contacted them and asked if it would work on my 2000 Big Bear, and of course they all replied no. I went ahead and printed off a copy of the wiring diagram of a 2000-2001 YMF400 Big Bear 400 Kodiak, and guess what? All of the necessary connections for the 2000 Big Bear are Identical to the Kodiak! So, I went to Amazon (because I have an account there) and bought one for $23.59 (AIVWUMOT-Ignition-Control-5GH-85540-00-00), figured "well for that price I guess I can give it a try". Well, it works great, and it is up and running. Thanks for everyone's help it was greatly appreciated!

Great reasearch! Thats good to know that it will work because they looked different and like you said everyone said that the Kodiak and Big Bear were different. I thought it was Odd that the Big Bear 400 was the only model that didnt have an aftermarket CDI available.

Well, here's the latest (LOL). It runs and sounds great, the only problem now is that I can't get it to go in gear! It goes right into reverse and into neutral, but when I try to go into first, it won't go. I've been trying to adjust the clutch but I'm not having any success so far. I would love some suggestions. It has set awhile so could they possibly be stuck together?

Did this just happen or has it been troublesome all along, i have the opposite trouble with mine its very hard to get into reverse but i rock it and its hard to do sitting on it so i get off and move it back and forth while shifting and it finally goes in.

I don't know exactly how the setup works, but there is a cable that operates a safety on reverse, and if that isn't adjusted right it could be not moving/giving enough after reverse has been deselected and so it's preventing forward gears being selected..

Yeah that's the thing. I haven't looked in the book but that's an interlock between forwards and reverse, so you can only engage one at a time, and the other's locked out. It might be keeping forwards locked out.

When it shouldn't.

They all have something a little different but does the same thing, my honda has a button on the  brake lever pull the brake lever push the button and shift to reverse, my yamaha has a knob you turn and hold it and then shift to reverse, my suzuki actually has a shif lever with high, low, and reverse, i actually like that better, but they all are cable operated to move the interlock.

I figured it out, the linkage was out of adjustment. It shifts fine now. Kind of hard to get out of reverse, but I can live with that. Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

I’ve got a 2000 400ex with a dg slip on muffler, it came with he stock muffler on it but the previous owner had the dg in a box so I put it on. I’ve been riding it for the past month and a half and every time I let off it backfires, and the other day the backfires got way louder, 2x louder! I’m concerned that I may hurt my motor? Why does is backfire??? Thanks
