As Gw says, a jumper pack or jumper leads from a bigger(car) battery, or even just attaching a battery charger while you're working on it will help by charging between attempts at starting.

If you use jumper leads off a car that's idling it keeps the voltage up near 14.5 volts and that makes them crank over faster, and sometimes when things are hard to start but nearly going, that helps a lot. It's better for your starter motor too to have high voltage. Low volts means it needs more amps, which is the current, and it's the slow turning and heavy current that over-heats them.

Just an update: ignition switch seemed to be working ok but thought ide bypass it and it fired first touch of button so faulty ignition switch, so job don. Just like to say a big thank you to everyone for there help and advice. Thanks so much. Cheers Andy.

Do you mean you disconnected the switch ? Bypassing it wouldn't work.

The ignition switch and the handle-bar kill switch both earth the stator to kill the spark, and they are both open circuit for run. Either switch can kill the spark. They both though, need to be connected and switched to run for the starter to operate.

I'm confused about what you've done.

I think I'd go back and check the switches were connected up correctly to start with. It's possible that someone had changed one or both switches with a later model switch, and the later model switch could have the wires in different positions in the plugs.

A little confused also, the start stop switch just kills spark, but in an earlier post, unless i read it wrong, you had good blue spark, but maybe it was intermittant, or not sparking when the plug was screwd in, which could be a switch problem.

Yeah, something's funny. I'm suspecting it's an intermittent problem (of course), that's come right by it's self, or because Andy changed something. Perhaps a chafed wire rubbing to earth and killing the spark sometimes, or a bad connection which Andy fixed inadvertently, or multiple problems.

I hate mysteries, and inadvertently curing things without knowing what it was I'd done..

If you're all good with it as is Andy then don't worry. If it plays up again though, remember this thread and we'll look into it a bit deeper.

Hi, I disconnected the ignition switch with  the block connection that connects the ignition switch to the wiring it is a 3 wire block connection with a orange, red, and black/white wire. It also has a separate yellow wire, then i made a connection block that looped the red and orange wire as it would if the ignition was on and the bike started stright up. If you look at my earlier post ive always said i dont think it looks like a very good spark but it has always had a spark. I havnt worked on the quad fir a few days apart from last night and this is what i did. Or sorry i also connected the booster to the battery.

Hmmm. If you've got the old version ignition with the cdi and coil all in one, then the red and orange wires aren't any part of the ignition. They only power the start relay. That shouldn't have made any difference to the spark. Connecting them like that might have made the starter more reliable but it shouldn't effect the spark..

I'm still mystified.

If it plays up again remind us about this thread.

Well I don’t know what to tell you but it has.  i even tried the tool again that you connect to the coil lead to see how strong spark is and this time it worked, i had a spark over 1cm on it and before if u remember I couldn’t even get a spark with the tool. But all ive done is connected the red and orange wires that connect to the ignition, nothing else.

Ha.. Well it's a weird one. Only thing I can think of is there's a bad earth somewhere but I've already tried to figure where it could be and I came up stumped.

Like you say.. If the kids are happy then we are happy. Gotta love happy kids.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

      Hello All
I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Troubleshooting a no spark issue, was running OK, maybe a little rich, turned it off, now no spark. I've checked/ohmed out the main key switch, the start/stop switch, neutral switch, brake switch - all good. It will crank the starter, but no spark with the starter or when I try the pull start. I've checked all fuses and diodes. Swapped battery. New plug. New coil. Swapped in a used CDI - no help. Traced, removed, cleaned, reattached all grounds. Removed things like my winch from the circuits to be sure a bad relay or something was dragging it down. When testing voltages, the orange wire going from the CDI to the ignition coil shows no/very low voltage-shouldn't it have 12V on it? Sometimes I get a very weak, intermittent glow on my spark tester, but not enough to fire the plug. I've checked continuity on just about all wires in the harness. Checked/cleaned/lubed w dielectric grease- all connections, redid a few that looked old/dirty. I've checked the stator resistances, all good, but have a stator and rectifier ordered anyway, will arrive Sunday. I verified that the rectifier has a voltage output back to charge the battery while cranking - 10.5-11V, low, but expected while starter is engaged. What else can I check as part of troubleshooting? I have a Haines service manual, but the 1999 350 4x4 seems to be an odd model, there isn't an exact electrical diagram for it, but found one for another year that has all the same number of wires and same color wires, so I've referenced that. Any hints, tips or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
