Sorry if this is in the wrong section,I didn't really consider it technical or needing advice. 2006,Linhai 300cc.What I was hoping was to find someone with the starter idler gear pin length and diameter. I've had the cover off alot of times and never realised there should be a pin from the case that meets the cover holding the starter gear in place. Now,a deepwell 1/4 in drive,5/16 deep well sits in the pin holes perfectly. Should I cut a lock ring groove in the end of it like a factory pin? I was thinking of just tack welding a washer to the end?

Best to find/replace the original pin which must have been there or the starter wouldn't have worked.

The original pin will be hardened.

If you use a set of vernier gauges you could measure the depth of each hole the pin goes into, and the depth below the case faces where the pin sits, and by adding all four measurements together you will have the pin length.

Well, long story short,I bought with a known no spark issue. All troubleshooting till now has been done with the plug out leaving very little backpressure and making it easy for the starter gear to stay aligned.

Now,with plug in,starter is pushing much harder and it only took 1 little back wind for it to drop enough to bind.

Excellant suggestion on the measurments, that is how I will get length. There seems to be a lock ring a certain distance from stater gear,to keep it from rattling around and sliding out of alignment back and forth. I may be forced to buy 1 but,for now I think I have a straight pin that'll work to keep things aligned while I hear it start for the first time(said optimistically)

Oh ok.. The  risks of buying not running..  At least it's a small part.. if you can get one.. An engineer could make you one and harden it for you.. Or you could buy high carbon (0.6%) steel rod and heat treat/harden it yourself.

I am new to this site. Now down to business, I have been given a Kawasaki 220, tires are trashed and it has been setting for a long time. Do I need a battery in it to find neutral? I know there is a neutral switch and if I shift down(7 times????)   then up one using the neutral switch I should be in Neutral. As you see I am in a learning curve here ......coments welcome.

I bought a 1996 Sportsman 500 4x4 about a month ago, and I love it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a few problems with the high-range gear. The first problem is that the gear selector will intermittently pop out of high and into neutral. This problem will sometimes occur when starting from a stop and sometimes will also occur while at cruising speed. The last time this happened I stopped and put it back into gear, however, as soon as I tried to throttle the machine would die. I turned it on again with no problems put it back into high and it died again. Once again I turned it on with no problems put it into low instead and it worked fine with no problem. I drove in low down the road slowly for a little and then shifted back into high with no issues.
I plan on working on it this weekend and would just like some opinions or feedback from anyone who may have experienced these problems before. I'm very mechanically inclined but im unsure of exactly where to start as this is the first Polaris ATV that I've owned. Any feedback is appreciated and thanks in advance

I finally got around to working on the TRX, this has been an ongoing problem with this machine. This is a machine that we keep on my Fathers property, i dont see it that often, my brother haad it professionally repaired last year and year before same problem, the new starter gears and bypass gears last about a year and the machine is not used that often, he said he was done with it , so i thought i should go take a look. Sure enough the gears were all malled again.

IMG_4910.mov   There is some slack in there but most is taken up by the gear cover,if anyone with history with these machines has had the same problem, let me know your findings. Where i am now im looking for finding replacement honda gears on Ebay and try those. I suspect the original was replaced with aftermarket gears years ago and they just worse quality as the years go by.

Well while I was waiting for new parts for the choke, I decided to adjust the clutch. When I removed the lock nut, I found the guy I bought it from or someone else had stripped the threads on the adjustment rod. I couldn’t get the adjustment rod to turn without putting a pair of channel locks on the screw driver, this was telling me something was wrong. So now the rod pushes in and out and spins freely too freely. So guess I’ll have to take the clutch housing off to see what’s going on and replace the adjustment rod, it’s threads are beyond repair, and there is something going on with the adjustment rod. If there’s another way please let me know. The further I go the worse it gets. Thanks for any help.

Picked up a barn find that someone had already partially disassembled because the “motor locked up” but they never opened the case. Everything was bagged and labeled, and as I’ve mentioned before- I love a challenge ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

After a couple hours of fun with various pullers and hammers I managed to persuade the magneto/flywheel to come off. Hoo boy what a mess. Then I found an actual rats nest in the clutch cover. ಠ_ಠ
