I am new to 4 wheelers but I just picked up a 2000 Big Bear YFM400FWN cheap. He said it had wiring issues don't know what the problem was before he kept saying it needed a new wiring harness. Well it does now the complete harness was out of the bike. I do have the old harness but really don't know where to start. My thoughts were start with a new harness but so far has been unobtainable. Any of you guys know where to start. Im ready to go back to the basics fire, gas and compression to get it running to see if engine and tranny is good, before sinking a lot of money into electronics, anyone have any ideas

Inspect the loom for any signs of chafing, then check at the ends of the wires where they go into plugs looking for dirty/corroded connections, and wriggle the wires just there looking for any that flex too easily, indicating the wire's broken inside it's insulation.

All of the electrical component tests are spelled out in the manual.. Most of the testing you can do without the bike running, using an ohm gauge.

After you've made ten posts you can download a manual from this site, up the top, in "More", then "atv service manuals", which takes you to a new page, in the new page on the right and down a bit you choose your make.

Thanks members for the vote of confidence I am really overwhelmed right now . I am an older guy I thought I could fix anything until I saw this mess of wires. I mostly work on 60s Jap bikes they are easy battery ,spark gas compression. This is my first 4 wheeler and. I also have a Suzuki Eiger that I got right after that on a trade trans locked on it. Thanks again !

How do you know which model Big Bear you have, I didn't know there were so many different models in 2000, I think mine is aYFM400FWN the only reason I think that is from a vin# internet search before I found this forum. Thanks!

I generally look up a parts place online and start comparing parts. Some parts places when you look up a part, will tell you what else that part fits. So.. if you look up your brakes, and fuel system, and transmission, and then check what other models have those same combination of features, that narrows it down often, then you could look up seats and bodywork, speedo, lights..   racks,  electrical parts, carbies are a good one to check, they vary a lot with markets and years..

Thanks! I did download the 2000 big bear, kodiak manual it was showing a water cooled engine mine is not water-cooled so that may not be the right manual. I thought all big bears were air cooled. It may not make a difference if all the wiring and components are the same.

I picked up a 2000 Kodiak and have been doing lots of repairs.  A good manual is important. When wiring, I agree that a good ohm meter is a must!  Removing body parts makes access a lot easier. Be sure to run and secure all wiring correctly m, especially around hot areas (cylinder head, exhaust, etc.)

I second the routing as BruceWA said. I rewired my switch and ran wires to the fuse box of the bike because the previous owner ran it too close to the exhaust... It shorted out and caused even bigger problems.

Thanks I appreciate the response, I've been looking for a new wiring harness the one I got with the bike is so chopped up, I may just rewire it myself, I've been trying to figure out how to power it up from the battery to see if it runs might have bad cdi or other problems .

1st problem, Does anyone know where I can find a stock carb for my Timberwolf, I have tried two different aftermarket carbs and they both suck. The machine runs great until it gets good and warm, then it keeps stalling unless I feather the throttle. it will even stall while I'm trying to go from 1st to reverse or vise versa. I took it to a buddy of mine who is a bike mechanic for years, and he told me try to find a factory carb. When I look online from dealers it says "NOT AVAILABLE" anyone have any suggestions ?

2nd, The small tab on the rear axle for towing is to short for even pulling my small yard trailer, I can't even turn a little bit and hit hits. I tried making an extension which worked great as far as length, but it bends the tab and then the extension drags the ground. I have an idea of what to do to fix it, but wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem and see how you solved it.

First thanks for any help guys, new to the forums and it's gotten me this far. I bought a 2001 bear tracker 250 for my family to get around the dirt bikes races. It wasn't running right and had a high idle. Previous owner thought it was a carb problem, so he ordered a new Zoom carb and new intake boot, but it still had the same high idle. ( I believe he had the throttle cable adjusted wrong, because it idled fine when I put it back together) So I tore down and cleaned the stock carb, and it started up and idled fine, but needed to have the choke 1/2 out to run.  I swapped to the new zoom carb and had the same issue. Choke half out bike ran ok. I played with the needle and the pilot screw with no change. ( bike did seem to be running rich though, but didn't get better when I tightened pilot screw or raised meddle) I Took it to the races and once I started bouncing around in the cattle fields the quad started cutting out real bad. It would barely run.  Sometimes it would run with choke off, sometimes choke 1/2, sometime choke full. I cleaned carb again, checked float level, and boots, no change still wouldn't run. Then suddenly it started running ok again.  This makes me believe it's an electrical issue rather then carb. I know there's no air leak, it's been checked, both carbs are clean( I've swapped them out a couple times, it starts up immediately and usually idles fine. But then bogs down/ or stutters under throttle. I saw the post on the guy who disconnected his rectifier and reconnected and suddenly it started working again, which lead me to believe it may be electrical and not carb.  So any advice on what I should check? Any way to test the CDI or rectifier?  Once again, I appreciate your help.

      Hello All
I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

I like to ride in wooded and grassy areas. It takes my mind off the everyday routines and helps me deal with my father's cancer. Also gives me a reason to get involved with forums like this one.

I’ve got a 2000 400ex with a dg slip on muffler, it came with he stock muffler on it but the previous owner had the dg in a box so I put it on. I’ve been riding it for the past month and a half and every time I let off it backfires, and the other day the backfires got way louder, 2x louder! I’m concerned that I may hurt my motor? Why does is backfire??? Thanks
