The OEM o-ring chain for my '97 Polaris Xpress 300 is $130+ while other brands run from $50 up to $80 with varying tensile strengths from 5000 to 8700. I would assume a higher tensile strength would be better but I don't know the tensile strength rating on the OEM chain. I usually always try to run OEM on everything but if I can save a little money it would be nice, if I'm looking it up correctly it takes the chain listed below but I have no idea what the ORD4 means...

The higher tensile strength chain would be  best  and definitely O ring chain  will last longer  unlubed. I  saw a quote of the 8700 tensile strength for the OEM  chain.
 In   my search I  came across a listing of  520  O-ring chain with a tensile  strength of 8200 in an online listing by the US  Walmart  (.com) that as long as it is the right width for  the sprockets  should  fit.  As long as you're  not beating that quad to the max the slightly lower strength chains should do the job. You'd  have to  count the links ( pitches)   to  order the chain and confirm  price.

Yessir, it helps a lot. Thank you..  Just took the old chain off and found a missing tooth on the front sprocket so it looks like I'm going to go ahead and replace both sprockets as well.

Ok, the parts fiche for my machine calls for the 520 o ring, 86 link which is the chain that was on it so I'm good on that. 

As far as sprockets,, it calls for 12t/36t but this machine has 12t/38t sprockets. What happens if I go back to the 36t rear sprocket? 

I have tried googling the answer only to confuse myself, unless I'm backwards, the extra 2 teeth on the rear sprockets helps on low end ??

The 36 tooth sprocket would make  it  slightly faster with slightly less pulling power.  Not really enough to  make any great difference in feel. About the only  place you would notice the difference  would be  when  you compare the top  speed.  The 36 tooth sprocket  would go  a couple of Mph  faster.

      I've been trying to piece this Lakota 300 back together, slowly. It's been a rabbit hole however. I replace one thing, then it leads to replacing other things. Anyway, When I got this thing I noticed that the hose coming off the camshaft cover wasn't attached to anything, it was just hanging loose. (It's literally just a foot long hose attached to nothing) I figured since it was venting the head it would be ok and I am sure it is.
      However, last night I was looking at the service manual and noticed that it mentioned that this atv has a crankcase breather tube as well. Mine does not have one, so I looked at Partzilla and looked at the parts diagram and sure enough, it's definitely supposed to have one. The problem however is, the service manual does not show how it hooks up and the parts diagram only shows the exploded view of the assembly. I just find that kind of strange, nowhere in the manual does it show how it connects. Does it have it connector, attach to a nipple? It just doesn't say and it bothers me that there is a hole there without anything attached to it.  If anyone has a Bayou 300 or Lakota 300 with an intact breather vent system and could possibly take some clear photos of it or know how it connects I would be very grateful. I have searched high and low and cannot find any information on it.

      I bought a 1996 Sportsman 500 4x4 about a month ago, and I love it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a few problems with the high-range gear. The first problem is that the gear selector will intermittently pop out of high and into neutral. This problem will sometimes occur when starting from a stop and sometimes will also occur while at cruising speed. The last time this happened I stopped and put it back into gear, however, as soon as I tried to throttle the machine would die. I turned it on again with no problems put it back into high and it died again. Once again I turned it on with no problems put it into low instead and it worked fine with no problem. I drove in low down the road slowly for a little and then shifted back into high with no issues. 
         I plan on working on it this weekend and would just like some opinions or feedback from anyone who may have experienced these problems before. I'm very mechanically inclined but im unsure of exactly where to start as this is the first Polaris ATV that I've owned. Any feedback is appreciated and thanks in advance
