Hi All,

I hope this is the right area to post looking for help.

I've got an old Yamaha Big Bear that I'm trying to get running as a bit of a project between jobs, but I've run into a problem that my novice mechanical skills cannot get around.

  • Compression test on the engine looks good.
  • I am getting spark from the lead when I press the start button. (and the fire suggests there's spark from the plug)
  • Various bits and pieces are spinning (behind recoil starter for example).

So things are not looking bad, but while I don't have the new carby in yet, I wanted to test with a little spray of Engine Start (like I've seen on all the Youtubes :p) and instead of sucking the spray in the intake manifold and burbling to life, it seems to backfire (explosively) and catch on fire.

I know you can do damage if you go crazy with the Engine start, but this happens with even a tiny spray.

What should I look for that might be the cause of this, anyone?

Thanks so much

Check the valve clearances. The inlet. It might be slightly too tight.

Try to check the exhaust isn't blocked. Maybe disconnect it at the head.

I'm presuming it did use to go and got parked up in a running state, and  hasn't been rebuilt

On a 4 stroke engine the piston gets to TDC twice in a cycle. It may be that the timing was set on the exhaust TDC and not compression TDC. Have to make sure the marks on the cam are correct and make sure both valves are closed at TDC.

If you were to assume that timing could be set when the piston is at the top, it is possible to set timing on the exhaust stroke and not true TDC which is the compression stroke. This, it's 180 out. I've done that years ago. Both valves have to be closed and the piston has to be at the top to be at true TDC.

What timing are you talking about? Engines have ignition timing and valve timing. Most of these types of atvs have a pickup coil on the crank that tells the cdi when to fire a wasted spark ignition.

Not all spark systems are wasted spark. Some only fire every second rotation.

Some cdi systems that run off the crank, that is get their low voltage off the stator, need more than one rotation before they will fire. They have to see several low voltage pulses before the trigger coil will fire them. The cam might need turning 180 degrees so the valves are closed on that second rotation of the crank.

MarkinAr sounds like he's familiar with these yamahas..  I'm not, but I'd check what he's suggesting.

I don’t like starting fluid to diagnose or make conclusions about an engine. Get the new carb or clean out the one you got and then see what’s happening. I’d only run it with the air filter on, if possible. When cranking it over, feel for air blowing out the exhaust to be sure there’s no mouse nest in the muffler. Also, when spraying the starting fluid, open the throttle wide open to get the mist past the plunger/butter fly valve.

First I say "most of these types of atv's are wasted spark", and then Mech comes back with " not all spark systems are wasted spark. Weird.

Of course not all spark systems are wasted spark, but I am guessing this one is. If the atv only has a pickup coil on the crank then how would it know what stroke it was on?

You make a good point there about opening the throttle wide open to lift the slide Cookie. If it's right down the ether isn't going to get in there.

And I agree, starting fluid isn't a good test really. It's full of oil or kero or something and can foul the plug. A teaspoon of fuel down the sparkplug hole is better.

Stale fuel can also foul sparkplugs. Have you got fresh fuel CJ ?

"Of course not all spark systems are wasted spark, but I am guessing this one is. If the atv only has a pickup coil on the crank then how would it know what stroke it was on? "..

Don't guess, be sure.

If you  want to know how the electronics involved work read up about "voltage doubler", and digital logic "flip-flop".

The stator sends out pulses of alternating power, they get "stacked" to charge a capacitor to a higher voltage, then the trigger coil triggers a discharge of the charged up capacitor. On a two stroke they fire every revolution, and on some four strokes that's fine too and they do run a wasted spark. Some engines though, because of a combination of valve overlap and ignition advance, don't like that, so they count the low voltage pulses as they charge the capacitor, and don't  let the trigger coil do it's thing till more than one full revolution has happened after the last firing, then it triggers at the next trigger signal.

Your backfiring with the engine start spray is likely because of what Cookie was saying..

First thanks for any help guys, new to the forums and it's gotten me this far. I bought a 2001 bear tracker 250 for my family to get around the dirt bikes races. It wasn't running right and had a high idle. Previous owner thought it was a carb problem, so he ordered a new Zoom carb and new intake boot, but it still had the same high idle. ( I believe he had the throttle cable adjusted wrong, because it idled fine when I put it back together) So I tore down and cleaned the stock carb, and it started up and idled fine, but needed to have the choke 1/2 out to run.  I swapped to the new zoom carb and had the same issue. Choke half out bike ran ok. I played with the needle and the pilot screw with no change. ( bike did seem to be running rich though, but didn't get better when I tightened pilot screw or raised meddle) I Took it to the races and once I started bouncing around in the cattle fields the quad started cutting out real bad. It would barely run.  Sometimes it would run with choke off, sometimes choke 1/2, sometime choke full. I cleaned carb again, checked float level, and boots, no change still wouldn't run. Then suddenly it started running ok again.  This makes me believe it's an electrical issue rather then carb. I know there's no air leak, it's been checked, both carbs are clean( I've swapped them out a couple times, it starts up immediately and usually idles fine. But then bogs down/ or stutters under throttle. I saw the post on the guy who disconnected his rectifier and reconnected and suddenly it started working again, which lead me to believe it may be electrical and not carb.  So any advice on what I should check? Any way to test the CDI or rectifier?  Once again, I appreciate your help.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

So I decided to pick up a small trailer if I could get one for the right price.  I found this one for a few hundred bucks on Craig’s list.  It is  a galvanized trailer which is exactly what I was looking for. The wood was shot and needed some minor repairs which I could care less about as long as the chassis was good.
I striped it down and put a new deck on. I had some vinyl realtree graphics that I had laying around so I added them to the fenders which I think worked out well. Very happy with this little guy.
I'm having the iron workers at my jobmake me up a few lightweight side rails that will have a 22 degree bend in them to accommodate the tires that slightly hang over the edge and will incorporate some tie down points as well.
