New bonehead here figuring out the trails! Just got a 2008 Suzuki Z400, and the guy said he just did an oil change, but needs a little more because he was letting it cycle through before topping it off. He says he used ATV Power SAE 5W-40 Synthetic 4T Engine Oil, but the manual just says use 10W-40. He lives a couple hours away, where it's a little bit colder, so I'm assuming that's why he used 5W instead of 10W? Anyways, I only need a little bit more oil, and since it's already new in there, can I put the 10W in and let it mix? Also, does the brand being the same matter at all? I haven't gone out and looked in person yet, but actual ATV oil seems a bit expensive compared to just getting some standard oil at AutoZone, and the online manual I found isn't that clear on options. I'd appreciate some feedback and experience in this area, as well as the best place to get oil and filters when it's time. Thanks in advance!

Since it's got synthetic oil in it now, you need to top up with synthetic oil. It doesn't have to be the same brand, but you should try to get an oil with the same rating... Probably SF or SG.

If you want to change to a straight petroleum oil(non-synthetic) you can at the next oil and filter change.

What about the 10W part?

Only reason I'd use that over 5W, is because when I do an oil change, I'm gonna use 10W, and right now I don't need a whole quart, so half of the 5W will never get used

If the 10 grade oil you are thinking of using isn't synthetic, then you shouldn't mix it with the synthetic oil that's in your motor.

Perhaps it would be easier, and give peace of mind, to do an oil and filter change right now. Then you can put regular petroleum 10w30  in it and have some to top up in future. Petroleum oil's about half the price of synthetic. If you have to buy much synthetic(due to packaging practices) to do the top up, it won't cost much more to buy a pack of petroleum and do a change.

The only 5W-40 they had was $18 a quart!😒 You're right, at that price I can just put new oil, but don't I have to use only synthetic from now on since that's what was in there? If so, that's a bummer, because it's twice the cost. Hopefully I can go longer in between changes then

Not that I know of. The guy at the store today was saying the "4T" oil is for bikes with a wet clutch, and whatever else it lubricates, and that's why you use that instead of regular oil

If you look in the workshop manual it says to use regular old petroleum oil. A lot of the more modern oils, whether synthetic or petroleum, have additives in them that aren't really doing anything useful in a motorbike engine, and which could even be doing harm. I stick with petroleum oil in my bikes, and of the spec they stipulate.

Yeah you can change back to petroleum oil. No worries. It's done all the time.

Get the motor hot, drain the oil, change the oil filter, and then put in your new oil. The tiny amount that sits in the cam box and oil galleries etc is not enough to cause a problem.

Cool, thanks Mech. Definitely makes me feel a little better after having to drop so much money at one time, between the bike and safety gear (just a helmet, gloves, and goggles for now). Ready to ride this weekend!

Mixing two weights isn't a real problem but if you have pure synthetic oil in there it's not a good idea to mix in carbon based oil. There is however a synthetic blend oil that you could possibly mix without problems between changes. Oil is oil and some oil is a far cry better than no oil.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

So we are almost a month into winter and I've been so busy working on my house that up until today, I didn't realize that we just haven;t gotten any real snow yet to warrant putting the plow on my grizzly. So that got me thinking, what are the latest plows out there and what ATV plows are the best? I've got 2 snow plows for my grizzly, a quadboss pile driver atv plow set up and a snowsport ATV plow. They are both a bit dated now and I tend to stick with the snowsport due to ease of use and I just like it so much. So if you have a plow on your ATV, please let us know what it is and post a picture with your atv/plow would be awesome. Would also like to know what you like and dislike about it.
This is back a while when I did a write up on these 2 plows.... in 2009 I got the snowsport and in 2012 I got the quadboss.

I have a Sportsman 450 HO and almost killed my self when loading it on my truck with ramps.  It rolled off the top of the ramps and tailgate and nearly landed on me.  I now want to winch the ATV in to the truck.  My question is are the front side bed tiedowns in my 2011 RAM strong enough to winch to without distorting the hooks or sides of the bed?
