So my friend was riding this and all 4 wheels locked up and had to be slid out of the woods. We put it on the trailer and and left it alone thinking it was ice.

So he drove home and as we drug it off the trailer “snap!” Started rolling again. I told him to leave it since it’s rolling and we can figure it out

I’m not close to the machine to try things or even work on it. Buy anyone have an idea. I was thinking ice like mentioned. But nothing was leaking to indicate a broken case or seal. And the fact it rolled just by bouncing on the trailer. Very confused

That's a bayou 300.  If all 3 wheels locked and it won't roll i'd check the ujoint in the rear axle housing.  Just had a Honda 300 blow that ujoint and tear the primary gear drive out of the side of the block when it did.  Unfortunately you have to pull the rear diff and slide the axle out of the housing to check but that would be what i would suspect first.

I do know it was grinding like a mofo. Then it locked up but freed up. But I will check that out when we get there. Thanks for your help mark. It’s appreciated

All 4 are the same. I just got info that this quad was abused. Hard. Like pushing race cars to start them. And plowing. So I’m not surprised things broke. But my friend wanted to use it before looking into it.

Have you checked that all four tires are the same size? It appears that the fronts look smaller then the rear bit it could be the pic.  All 4x4's have to have the same size.
Just a shot in the dark but hey could be.

I'm glad I caught this post.  I didn't know 4X4s needed all four tires the same.  I never owned a 4X4.  Is that for all quads?

4x4s in general have the same gear ratio front and back unless specifically designed otherwise.  All four wheels have to rotate at the same time with cars and trucks as well. So unless there are specific builds then yes same size tires are required.

My `1991 Honda Fourtrax 300FW  actually calls for  1 "  smaller tires  on the   front than the  rear ....  23" diameter  on the  front  and 24" on the rear  because of a slight difference  in the  gear ratios in the differentials. . That being  said most, including  me  run  the same  size tire  all the way  around.   The  gearing  is close  enough  and since  quads are seldom  ridden  on pavement or hard surfaces  that  prevent  tire slip   we don't  have a problem with drive train  binding.   Yes,  it is  "normal"  to  have tire sizes  front and rear the same  on 4x4 trucks and SUV's but it  is not necessarily  so  on  Quads ,  tractors and some other off highway  equipment that are  4 x4  or all wheel  drive.

I  don't  know the specs  on other  machines. That is why  I  suggest  checking  because although  the same  size  is  normal  all  the  way  around  but  if  a machine  for some reason  uses  differing ratios  it  can  cause  binding  and  breakage .

I would  guess  newer  machines   would  be the same all  around  but double check  yours  to  find out. It doesn't  hurt  and can save  grief  down the road .

So I decided to pick up a small trailer if I could get one for the right price.  I found this one for a few hundred bucks on Craig’s list.  It is  a galvanized trailer which is exactly what I was looking for. The wood was shot and needed some minor repairs which I could care less about as long as the chassis was good.
I striped it down and put a new deck on. I had some vinyl realtree graphics that I had laying around so I added them to the fenders which I think worked out well. Very happy with this little guy.
I'm having the iron workers at my jobmake me up a few lightweight side rails that will have a 22 degree bend in them to accommodate the tires that slightly hang over the edge and will incorporate some tie down points as well.

I like to ride in wooded and grassy areas. It takes my mind off the everyday routines and helps me deal with my father's cancer. Also gives me a reason to get involved with forums like this one.

Hello all! I’m new to the 4 wheeler world, but not new to the mechanic world. I was a diesel mechanic for many years and last year got into jet skis. I just bought a 1987 Yamaha moto 4 350 and now learning the ins and outs of 2 stroke engines. Looking forward to learning all the things.

Just aquired this Honda 4514. I had heard of them and seen them but had never really looked at one. Amazing machine from the 90s.
It has a 14 HP inline 2 cylinder engine. A cute little fan like the old school cars had and a little radiator. It has a timing belt on the back of the engine running the cam and a water pump. Just like a miniature car engine with  electronic clutches to turn blades on and off. Pretty hight tech for the 90s not a small thing and built like a tank weighs in at 600 pds hydrostatic trans. I have found out that almost anything you have to do to it the engine has to come out starter timing belt water pump. Very expensive parts i think most got junked for that reason, i did find out they were built by John Deere except for the honda engine.
Does anyone here have any expierience with these.
