Hi all,

I have just got a 1995 Bayou 220 from my brother. It is in decent condition ant it has not been used much, yet it has been sitting idle for a long time (4+ years).

The plan is to overhaul it and move it to a location where it will be used 4-6 times a year, so, beyond having the battery charged, the idea is to have it ready and in good condition. It will be stored in a steltered place while waiting to be used.

My questions would be: 1. What things should I carry out as basic overhaul tasks / 2. What are the typical aches, things to watch out for in this model/year.

I definitely plan on changing all the fluids, filters,  battery, cleaning the carb, etc. but any specific recommendation from your experience will be of great help.

thanks in advance!

Welcome to Quadcrazy. When you say overhaul are you talking about tearing it completely down and putting it back together or tearing into the usual suspects that prevent a bike from running due to sitting for a long time?

Secondly has the bike been laid up inside someplace dry or outside? Has the fuel been drained from the bike and the carburetor run dry before storing/letting it sit?

These are all factors because if a bike was ran dry and shut down then the carb would be clean for the most part and start right up if the tank is clean and fresh fuel added.

I'm going to say none of the above happened except for the possibility of it being in a dry place.

So over all the carburetor def should come off and be cleaned.  Pick up a can of gunk carburetor cleaner or soaking can and clean it out good. Use a small piece of wire and air pressure to blow out all the small ports and jets.

Fresh plug, battery and all fluids like you said and definitely check the differential fluids.

Hopefully the tires aren’t dry and cracked. If so amazon has tires for that bike.

You can re do the seat cover yourself if needed. It’s cheap to do and looks great.

New grips from amazon will run you $12 to $15 bucks.

One thing I want to mention and only bc it happened on the 220 I rebuilt and a few others that have come across the forum would be the neutrality safety switch. This switch locks out the ignition and dash lights and is a common problem with this series of the bayou. So if that is one of your problems it’s easily diagnosed but a pain in the as* to change.

Good luck and keep us posted.  Post a few pics of the bike as you go.

Thanks for the thorough reply.

Ideally I would disassemble it almost completely, but I want to put special focus on the parts more prone to problems. I live in Argentina, so spare parts, although somewhat availalable, are not readily available and have to be ordered.

It has been laid up in a sheltered place but it has not been ran dry. Carb and filters are definitely prime candidates for thorough cleanout. I had missed to include the spark plug in my initial post, thanks.

Thanks for the neutrality safety switch hint, I will include it in my list!

I will keep you guys posted on the progress!

      Hello All
I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

I have a 1990 Bayou 220 that runs pretty well for it's age--needs a new muffler, but sounds tough.    Have had to start with a pull cord since I got it, and recently started troubleshooting the start button.  Finding a lot of information on this issue in the forum, but haven't been able to chase it down yet.  Got a new battery, new starter solenoid, and going to replace the starter relay this week, but not convinced that's going to do the trick, since I can't get the neutral light on when turning the key on.  I can start it by jumping the solenoid, but the 2 black wires to the relay do not activate the starter.  Bad ground or a short somewhere?  Is there a good way to just test the ground?

Bought 4 wheeler for kids. Used to run and soon as it was put in gear it died. I have put new carburater, new plug and battery. The neutral light won't come on. I replaced the solenoid, then the positive battery cable and today put new relay assembly on. Still no neutral light. Not getting any juice and I don't know why.
