Hi all,

I picked up this quad after the previous owner couldn't get it going.

The issue is that I can't get it to fire at idle or at all.

I've...

- replaced plug. Decent blue spark. Also tested with spark tester inline.
- rebuilt the carb. PO had already bypassed vacuum lines from petcock. There's fuel at the cylinder
- Checked compression with new gauge. reads 190 psi
- cleaned all contacts I could access.
- am currently jumping with car battery. Solenoid jumpered.
- checked cam timing at TDC and adjusted valve lash
- put gas directly into cylinder to see if it will fire at least momentarily

Motor turns over well. Plug gets wet.

Motor may fire once or twice but smokes through exhaust a bit as if it's trying to fire or combusting.

This leads me to suspect timing. As mentioned I checked the flywheel mark versus cam marks. Perhaps someone has been in there before because I can't find a 'T' on the flywheel but there is a very visible paint mark which aligns with TDC position on piston. Possibly a slipped flywheel/woodruff?

Is it possible that if it had seen previous repairs, that the timing could still be off? I'm reluctant to dig into the flywheel/stator area if there's something else I could have missed but all signs point me to that area. Would a bad CDI cause spark timing to be off?

Anywhere else to diagnose incorrect spark timing?

I've scoured these forums and elsewhere but I'm posting just in case there's something I've overlooked up until now.

Thanks very much for reading!

Check your carb again. Your float might be off and overflowing the carb internally. Make sure the carb is in spec. If your getting spark and timing is in spec on the valves, then to much fuel will foul the plugs and prevent it from firing.

Also there are timing marks on the stator side thru a plugged hole. You will need a screw driver to pull them off. Then take the hole center of the casing and put your socket in there. Turn the motor and align the timing at tdc. Then check your cams.

Thanks.

A few things...

Would it be possible to eliminate the carb as an issue by simply removing it and direct injecting gas into the intake and/or through the spark plug hole? Wouldn't it run a few seconds at least?

Trying to visualize the timing marks. I'll go check that now.

I appreciate the assistance!

I think we're talking about the same thing. On mine, the flywheel mark plug is a 17mm head, though my 'mark' is obscured or highlighted by a white paint mark. It seems to gel with TDC compression and I've already done that.

I would NOT remove the carb and try sending fuel into the engine.

I know you tested spark but I would pull the plug out and rest it against the head. Turn the fuel off and crank the engine watching the spark for about 5 seconds and see if it’s consistent.  Make sure there is no difference in the rhythm of the spark while cranking. For instance, you see spark for a few cranks and it goes away and comes back is what I mean. It should be steady.

Then I would go back to the timing and triple check that’s its good. Find the T mark.

Like @06kfx440 said go through the carburetor and make sure the float is good and all settings including the fuel air screw are set properly. The main jet needle setting “the E clip” what’s it set at ?

Fuel pump, (if fuel injected) make sure its good and not pushing too much fuel into the engine. Make sure the boot that connects the carb to the engine is good and no cracks.

Make sure your fuel is not bad.

Is the choke working correctly and the air intake clear of any nests or obstructions? Been nests rodents etc.

check your voltage at the battery when cranking. Could be a bad regulator.

Go through these things and get back. Take your time and  make sure your good.

Ok. Will try that again and look for steady pulse at the plug.

e-clip is at the fourth notch.

Boots look good. Not an EFI model but pump seems to pulse. Pet-cock vacuum activation has been by-passed by previous owners. I suppose it's a common mod? Vacuum line from petcock is plugged with a screw as is the carb side.

Fuel should be good. Choke plunger moves freely in its location and cable has been lubed.

Will do.

Go through these things and get back. Take your time and  make sure your good.

Thanks for the feedback. Though I had gone through the carb and cleaned it all out I ordered a kit anyway and it arrived yesterday. I've installed it and am ready to test again today. Also, yesterday I went out and got a proper atv battery and starter solenoid for it. Up until then, I had the solenoid jumpered and was using a car battery to get the starter spinning. I didn't feel good about it as there would be no battery when it finally got running and the manual says that's a no-no.

Will report back with my findings today.

SUCCESS!

More details soon...

...meanwhile, I mangled the cam access plug and am throwing oil on the exhaust?

Any ideas for something I can use while I wait to source the actual part?

TKS.

Already tried a boat transom plug: too big. lol

Called my local Suzuki dealer yesterday and it's a part they'd have to order so I bailed on the idea thinking it was the least of my concerns at the moment.

It's a concern now!

The plug that you have to remove to get a visual on the cam position for timing purposes. That's what I mangled.

Success is that the quad is now running; albeit with a very high idle that the idle screw seems to ignore.

Found a temp solution using a cork with electrical tape.  :)

Now I'm trying to figure out the high idle issue.

Too high to attempt to put it in gear, may have to mess with the pilot screw.

Your high idle may be an intake boot or a disconnected filter or a vaccume leak somewhere.

Heh. Yeah. I was about to go digging around for that kind of trouble.

Turned out to be a kink of some sort in the throttle cable. I had cycled it fully before twisting the carb into position and it all looked good.

Go figure.

I'm just glad I didn't have to take the carb out again.

Yep. Thanks for the reminder.

This one will just buy me some time.

Now that I know the thing runs I feel better about ordering some parts for it to get it back into great condition.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

Troubleshooting a no spark issue, was running OK, maybe a little rich, turned it off, now no spark. I've checked/ohmed out the main key switch, the start/stop switch, neutral switch, brake switch - all good. It will crank the starter, but no spark with the starter or when I try the pull start. I've checked all fuses and diodes. Swapped battery. New plug. New coil. Swapped in a used CDI - no help. Traced, removed, cleaned, reattached all grounds. Removed things like my winch from the circuits to be sure a bad relay or something was dragging it down. When testing voltages, the orange wire going from the CDI to the ignition coil shows no/very low voltage-shouldn't it have 12V on it? Sometimes I get a very weak, intermittent glow on my spark tester, but not enough to fire the plug. I've checked continuity on just about all wires in the harness. Checked/cleaned/lubed w dielectric grease- all connections, redid a few that looked old/dirty. I've checked the stator resistances, all good, but have a stator and rectifier ordered anyway, will arrive Sunday. I verified that the rectifier has a voltage output back to charge the battery while cranking - 10.5-11V, low, but expected while starter is engaged. What else can I check as part of troubleshooting? I have a Haines service manual, but the 1999 350 4x4 seems to be an odd model, there isn't an exact electrical diagram for it, but found one for another year that has all the same number of wires and same color wires, so I've referenced that. Any hints, tips or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

My name says it all. I have a '03 Honda Sporttrax 400EX with a new aftermarket carb on it that seems to be having issues. I can start it but it idles really rough and when I give it throttle it just kills the engine. I have tried adjusting the idle screw but to no avail. I am in the San Diego Ca area.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I would also like to get an owners manual for the thing too but can't seem to find a downloadable one.
