good day everyone,

new to this page. I need help with my 1994 fourtrax 300 4x4. the bike stop sparking for some odd reason so no big deal I order a new ignition coil, that was not it so I order a new cdi box. now I get sparks. by now the battery is low from cranking so much, so I boost it with the truck. the bike as the hardest time to start and when it does it runs rough, bogging, backfire,..., reverse light is on even if im not in reverse but in neutral. and the reverse light gets briter as I rev the bike.i clean the carb twice, remove the reverse sensor and check the ohm, reading 0.0 to 0.9. any idea, I need to get this bike going asap. thanks for your time

The reverse light switch (sensor) should read 0 ohms  or close to  it when  it   is  closed to  indicate the machine is in reverse.  The lights brightening  as you rev up the motor  is normal  as  the  voltage  rises  as the  motor  revs  faster . Check the voltage at the battery  when the  motor  is running It  should be  about  12.5  at idle and rising to a maximum of  between  13.5 and 14.2v . If  it  is  low  it could also  be  the source  of the rough running , although  the  rough running, bogging  and  backfire is usually  from the motor running  lean.  It  could be   from  a missed plugged passage  or just the  idle  air  mixture  out of adjustment.  Check  for  leakage of the  high tension wire to the spark  plug  and  try  a new  plug too as the spark plug  could be intermittent .

Where did you get the CDI box? I ran into this with a customers bike (more than one actually) which he replaced the CDI box with a cheap one from one of the big internet sites. I replaced the CDI with our "known good shop box" and the trouble was gone. The last bike i ran into this with was a TRX200D i think. I usually replace CDIs with stock Honda, or one from Ricks Motorsport Electrics, about the only ones i trust. I'd direct you to my website but i'm putting together a brand new one at the moment.     www.mettlers.biz in case your interested. As davefrombc stated above, rule out the reverse switch to be sure.

Thanks for your help guys, so yesterday i tryed pretty much everything under the sun to get this bike going, finally i contacted my mechanic and that’s exactly what he told me about the cdi box, he said don’t expect much from a cdi box at 20$. So ill order a new one from Honda and ill keep you posted. Thanks again.

Ok so i got a new cdi and coil from honda. Try them on and still no spark.... one thing the battery is dead but i boost with my truck to get the bike going, so lots of power to the battery there. What else should i be looking at. Thanks for your time guys

Start to look at the wire harness for any loose or broken wires.  Kill switch may have an issue.   If not there then the stator coil or secondary coil.

If you know how to use a tester you can eliminate those parts to avoid buying them.

Sounds like the regulator/rectifier is bad.  That will cause a no spark issue on those old 300's.  I'd get a new battery also.  Not a good idea to jump it with your truck ESPECIALLY a running truck.  Too many amps will reek havoc with the cdi and regulator.

hi guys i'm having the exact same trouble with my trx 300, i try to crank it over and the reverse light comes streight on? i have replaced the coil, cdi box, regulator,  stator/generator, tilt switch(the box next to the cdi with green plug marked HC04), new battery, all new fuses in wiring loom and a new spark plug of course. i've taken a good look at all the wiring on the bike and i can see anything wrong. ive heared about the reverse sensor located by the foot brake behind the metal plate going wrong.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Hello, i had a similar issue with my 300 TRX , no spark (1991) , thought it would be the CDI but it was the connections to the CDI that had some green crust on it. Cleaned it and runs like champ now.

1st problem, Does anyone know where I can find a stock carb for my Timberwolf, I have tried two different aftermarket carbs and they both suck. The machine runs great until it gets good and warm, then it keeps stalling unless I feather the throttle. it will even stall while I'm trying to go from 1st to reverse or vise versa. I took it to a buddy of mine who is a bike mechanic for years, and he told me try to find a factory carb. When I look online from dealers it says "NOT AVAILABLE" anyone have any suggestions ?

2nd, The small tab on the rear axle for towing is to short for even pulling my small yard trailer, I can't even turn a little bit and hit hits. I tried making an extension which worked great as far as length, but it bends the tab and then the extension drags the ground. I have an idea of what to do to fix it, but wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem and see how you solved it.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

Troubleshooting a no spark issue, was running OK, maybe a little rich, turned it off, now no spark. I've checked/ohmed out the main key switch, the start/stop switch, neutral switch, brake switch - all good. It will crank the starter, but no spark with the starter or when I try the pull start. I've checked all fuses and diodes. Swapped battery. New plug. New coil. Swapped in a used CDI - no help. Traced, removed, cleaned, reattached all grounds. Removed things like my winch from the circuits to be sure a bad relay or something was dragging it down. When testing voltages, the orange wire going from the CDI to the ignition coil shows no/very low voltage-shouldn't it have 12V on it? Sometimes I get a very weak, intermittent glow on my spark tester, but not enough to fire the plug. I've checked continuity on just about all wires in the harness. Checked/cleaned/lubed w dielectric grease- all connections, redid a few that looked old/dirty. I've checked the stator resistances, all good, but have a stator and rectifier ordered anyway, will arrive Sunday. I verified that the rectifier has a voltage output back to charge the battery while cranking - 10.5-11V, low, but expected while starter is engaged. What else can I check as part of troubleshooting? I have a Haines service manual, but the 1999 350 4x4 seems to be an odd model, there isn't an exact electrical diagram for it, but found one for another year that has all the same number of wires and same color wires, so I've referenced that. Any hints, tips or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
