I am new here and just wanted to say Hi. I just acquired a 1996 Sportsman 500 that a family member bought new and used for a week each year at a hunting camp. It was always stored inside and serviced regularly. If anyone is aware of anything on this machine that needs special attention I welcome your advice.

Thanks

A manual is at the top of my list, but I need a few more post for that. I've got to get the plastic all off and give it a good cleaning. Put a winch on last weekend and saw there is a lot of dust buildup under the covers from sitting. I'll send some pics soon.

those things are good for making mud bosses...  Iv'e got an 04 sportsman I'm fixing up and if I dont sell it, I'm lifting it, putting on mud wheels, snorkel, radiator relocate, it already has a winch.. first thing i need to get it running lol.  I'd check all fluids, wiggle the wheels side to side to check the bearings, check alignment, oil all moving parts, check all cv boots, engine timing, valve clearance, air filter, sp, and send pics!

the valve clearence and timing arnt likely to be off unless its been ridden hard...you be the judge of that...the way I look at it, it would take me 10 mins to make a new quad into a 'ridden hard' quad so I look at all used quads as ridden hard, 3 months old or 25 years old..  I ride the crap out of them- the only breaks they get is if they're broken 😎

      Hello All
I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

I bought a 1996 Sportsman 500 4x4 about a month ago, and I love it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a few problems with the high-range gear. The first problem is that the gear selector will intermittently pop out of high and into neutral. This problem will sometimes occur when starting from a stop and sometimes will also occur while at cruising speed. The last time this happened I stopped and put it back into gear, however, as soon as I tried to throttle the machine would die. I turned it on again with no problems put it back into high and it died again. Once again I turned it on with no problems put it into low instead and it worked fine with no problem. I drove in low down the road slowly for a little and then shifted back into high with no issues.
I plan on working on it this weekend and would just like some opinions or feedback from anyone who may have experienced these problems before. I'm very mechanically inclined but im unsure of exactly where to start as this is the first Polaris ATV that I've owned. Any feedback is appreciated and thanks in advance
