So I bought this 1989 fourtrax 300 2x4 as a non running quad(no spark).finally got the thing to spark yesterday accidentally,by pushing the starter button while the kill switch was off.(I was holding the coil wire and it shocked me).so low and behold the kill switch for some reason works backwards.anyway it started up but runs terrible.it will sit and idle for as long as you let it,but as soon as the throttle is touched it boggs, and dies.thought it was a fuel issue,so I verified clean fuel source and flow from the tank.also cleaned the needle valve and jets in the carb, but that didn't help at all.if you very carefully apply throttle it will run and move but if you get past 25-30% throttle it will start popping out of the exhaust and loosing power.

Clean  the carb again. You  have a classic "running lean" problem  when you open the throttle . It  could be a plugged passage  or the  tiny drilled  holes in the  main  jet  tube,  the  idle  air screw maladjusted or possibly the float level set too  low so the float bowl  doesn't  fill  properly.  There  is a download  of the service manual  that would cover  your  machine  in the forum's download  section .

The float is plastic,so I'm not sure how to adjust it.the main and pilot jets are good and clean.also the plug was black and sooty in appearance.the pick of the plug looks gray but it's actually black

Tore into the carb again and it is spotless,it seems like a rev limiter is causing it to act this way or weak spark.plus the whole thing with the kill switch only working backwards("run" kills it and "stop" gives spark) I posted a video of it running and me trying to rev it,but the sound quality sucks.

It  is possible a weak spark  or faulty  plug that fails under increased pressure could cause the problem.  I still  think  it  is  a lean  burn  problem  though. It  could be  from a plugged  passage or a tiny  hole  that you're  missing  in the  jetting ..Check   for a  leak  or  crack  allowing  air to  enter  on the  block  side of the  carb too.   There is no rev limiter  on your  quad..  My own  quad is  a 1991   Honda Fourtrax 300 FW  ..  basically the same  machine you have except it is  full time  4 wheel  drive.

Here  is a  video  on servicing the carb.

The carb has been removed and cleaned by a professional. It is confirmed clean and all the passages are clean as with the jets.i still feel it's electrical/ignition that's causing the problem. One thing I have noticed is that the reverse light stays on even though the bike is not in reverse.

Thanks bud.i think if I put the inductive lead from my timing light on it it will show the same thing.it should stop strobing when it looses spark

That should work  as a spark test too..... and with  a brighter ,easier to see  light. When  you finally find the fault,  please let  everyone  know  just what it was .  Every time someone posts a  problem  solved  it helps the  next  one  with similar  trouble .

      Hello All
I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Troubleshooting a no spark issue, was running OK, maybe a little rich, turned it off, now no spark. I've checked/ohmed out the main key switch, the start/stop switch, neutral switch, brake switch - all good. It will crank the starter, but no spark with the starter or when I try the pull start. I've checked all fuses and diodes. Swapped battery. New plug. New coil. Swapped in a used CDI - no help. Traced, removed, cleaned, reattached all grounds. Removed things like my winch from the circuits to be sure a bad relay or something was dragging it down. When testing voltages, the orange wire going from the CDI to the ignition coil shows no/very low voltage-shouldn't it have 12V on it? Sometimes I get a very weak, intermittent glow on my spark tester, but not enough to fire the plug. I've checked continuity on just about all wires in the harness. Checked/cleaned/lubed w dielectric grease- all connections, redid a few that looked old/dirty. I've checked the stator resistances, all good, but have a stator and rectifier ordered anyway, will arrive Sunday. I verified that the rectifier has a voltage output back to charge the battery while cranking - 10.5-11V, low, but expected while starter is engaged. What else can I check as part of troubleshooting? I have a Haines service manual, but the 1999 350 4x4 seems to be an odd model, there isn't an exact electrical diagram for it, but found one for another year that has all the same number of wires and same color wires, so I've referenced that. Any hints, tips or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

i just picked this up. was told ran fine but overheating issues led to replacing head gasket and head. has not ran since. he is not a mechanic but helped someone else who he could not get back to finish job, got aggravated and put up for sale. i was thinking timing issues. i have 110-120psi on all 3 cylinders so i think valves are correct. dont know about distributor yet. however i have no spark. i have no power going to ignition coil. tried to follow white wire but gets lost in wire harness. does anyone have a wiring diagram? can anyone tell me what conditions have to be met before starting. motor turns over so i would think all safeties are met but you never know.

I've been trying to piece this Lakota 300 back together, slowly. It's been a rabbit hole however. I replace one thing, then it leads to replacing other things. Anyway, When I got this thing I noticed that the hose coming off the camshaft cover wasn't attached to anything, it was just hanging loose. (It's literally just a foot long hose attached to nothing) I figured since it was venting the head it would be ok and I am sure it is.
However, last night I was looking at the service manual and noticed that it mentioned that this atv has a crankcase breather tube as well. Mine does not have one, so I looked at Partzilla and looked at the parts diagram and sure enough, it's definitely supposed to have one. The problem however is, the service manual does not show how it hooks up and the parts diagram only shows the exploded view of the assembly. I just find that kind of strange, nowhere in the manual does it show how it connects. Does it have it connector, attach to a nipple? It just doesn't say and it bothers me that there is a hole there without anything attached to it.  If anyone has a Bayou 300 or Lakota 300 with an intact breather vent system and could possibly take some clear photos of it or know how it connects I would be very grateful. I have searched high and low and cannot find any information on it.

      Thanks
