2000 Polaris 400 scrambler trans engage

my first quad,2000 polaris 400 scrambler.my daughter gave me her old quad,had been sitting for a couple of years,got it running.filled trans fluid and put on a new belt.can't put in gear while running,can start it in gear and it seems to work well.any thoughts on what is wrong. thanks

Most likely your belt is either wrong or just too tight, keeping the transmission input shaft turning.

There are shims in the drive CVT clutch to change the belt preload. There may be adjustments in the engine to transmission distance.

You should have a little over an inch (1 1/8 to 1 1/4) of depression in your belt.

Also, there is usually a sleeve on the drive clutch shaft that should rotate freely. If it is siezed, it can cause the belt to drag, causing it to not go into gear while running.
