So I have a 1994 Honda trx300 and I still am having some carb issues. I cleaned the carb and installed a new carb kit. Starts great, idles great, but when in 3rd it seems to pulsate. Not steady power. Any ideas on the setting the setting for the carb? I put a new spark plug in and the old one did seem pretty dark and sooty. I checked the gap on new one and installed. Went for a ride and it didn't seem any different. Any suggestions would be great..

Answers here all over the board.

The pilot (not air) adjustment screw on the bottom will not affect any part of the throttle range other than 0 to @ 5 %. Beyond that throttle position, the slide cut, needle and needle jet come into play (3 to 85 %). Then the main jet is the only metering system in play (70 to 100%).

Valve adjustment problems are not limited to any operating range...usually hard or no-start issues OR excessive valve noise.

You use a pressure tester to check the needle and seat in the carb...hook hose to where the fuel line attaches and pressurize to 3 or 4 psi. This is the most critical thing in carb rebuild. Without a float system that maintains the fuel level in the bowl correctly, you're wasting your time with any other metering circuit. The seat is cast into the carb body on this unit. It has to be chemically cleaned and polished before you can expect a good needle to seal.

That all said, I think I'd focus on the intake/carb system. Be sure the air filter is correctly mounted and serviced. If using a K&N filter, replace it with a correctly serviced oiled foam unit. make certain that the air box is intact and the top is secured. 300's use a CV carb that has to have a certain amount of vacuum created on the back side of the carb in order for the slide to lift correctly. Also, the 300's have a small pump attached to the bowl. Check the diaphragm. When bad they run rich. Although I use carb kits often, I use no more of the parts in them than needed. I find OEM parts to be more precise (but expensive). I rarely use the jet needle or needle jet in the kits as they can be FAR off from the original and give hard-to-diagnose mid-throttle problems.

There could be other issues, but given the description of your problem, this is where I'd start. I'm curious to know the outcome. Keep us informed.

I’ve got a 2000 400ex with a dg slip on muffler, it came with he stock muffler on it but the previous owner had the dg in a box so I put it on. I’ve been riding it for the past month and a half and every time I let off it backfires, and the other day the backfires got way louder, 2x louder! I’m concerned that I may hurt my motor? Why does is backfire??? Thanks

My name says it all. I have a '03 Honda Sporttrax 400EX with a new aftermarket carb on it that seems to be having issues. I can start it but it idles really rough and when I give it throttle it just kills the engine. I have tried adjusting the idle screw but to no avail. I am in the San Diego Ca area.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I would also like to get an owners manual for the thing too but can't seem to find a downloadable one.

So I’ve got a 2000 Honda 400ex absolutely love it!! I’ve had it for about a month, I ride with bruteforce 750’s, outlander 850’s and 1000 sxs’s and I was thinking of getting a trx450r carb and a full hmf exhaust. And probably doing the air box mod too, how much power would this give my 400? Just a little different or a big difference? Cuz if it’s not much of a different I’ll just stick with my dg slip on..... thanks!

I recently bought a 87 TRX 250 not running of course, the owner had a brand new Key Switch on it.
I think it is the wrong one or wrong wire colors as the colors dont match up with wiring diagram i downloaded for it.
anyone have a pic of their ign switch wires where they connect with the wire colors for that model? I ended up leaving the black/w stripe and
green wire disconnected in order to hot wire it for other testing but would like to know as the colors dont match diagram.

I have a 1990 Bayou 220 that runs pretty well for it's age--needs a new muffler, but sounds tough.    Have had to start with a pull cord since I got it, and recently started troubleshooting the start button.  Finding a lot of information on this issue in the forum, but haven't been able to chase it down yet.  Got a new battery, new starter solenoid, and going to replace the starter relay this week, but not convinced that's going to do the trick, since I can't get the neutral light on when turning the key on.  I can start it by jumping the solenoid, but the 2 black wires to the relay do not activate the starter.  Bad ground or a short somewhere?  Is there a good way to just test the ground?
