I hate to be that guy that signs up only to ask for help, but I am at my wits end. I am working on a 2000 DS650 that quit running after the rider dumped the clutch repeatedly.

I had to fix a few things to get where I am now, cranks but doesn't start.

New starter clutch
New CDI
New coils
New trigger coil set at .003
New spark plugs set at .026
New rectifier

Verified TDC, used locking bolt and pulled cam cover to verify valve timing which seems good. While I had it locked at TDC, I did a compression leakdown test which showed a loss of only 4@100psi
Compression test shows about 112#
Carb had clean gas, but pulled jet and blew through passages, all clear and clean
All this thing does is spin. Nice, bluish/white spark at the plugs, added fuel through spark plug hole and used ether, both failed, not even a hiccup or fart, just keeps spinning.

Someone please give me some ideas here before I pull out my gray hair?!

thanks for the reply, I am pretty certain it is TDC on compression/power stoke, all cam lobes are horizontal and opposing each other with all valves closed. Also, My leak down test would have dumped out the exhaust.

I should add that I am a bit perplexed that the trigger coil pad is no where near the trigger coil while locked in place..

That is not good .. Check to  see  if  possibly the   key on the  rotor has sheared  and allowed it  to  turn  on the  crankshaft.  That would explain why  the magnet is nowhere  near  the  trigger  coil  at   TDC compression.

"Dumping  the  clutch" several  times could  have   caused  the  motor  to abruptly   drop  in  RPM  putting  a  lot  of  inertial  torque   on the  rotor  subsequently  shearing  the  key ..

I think I figured out where I went wrong. When I replaced the starter clutch and gear, I clocked the mag in the wrong location. Can anyone show me or tell me where the pad should be with the lock bolt installed at TDC? The manual said about 10 degrees at most or something, but should the pad be forward or behind the trigger pad?

I just took it apart again. the key is fine.

Since it works as a magneto, I would say  after. Ignition systems usually  fire   a  few  degrees  before  TDC to  give  maximum power. The higher  the  rpm,  the   earlier  the  spark . . Low  rpm   motors  sometimes use  a retarded spark   for bottom  end  power .  The  magnet  of the trigger pad  should  pass the  pickup  before the  piston reaches  TDC to  produce the  advanced spark.  The    manual  should specify  the timing , and  I would suspect  there should be  a  timing mark on the  gears.

I  found a service manual  for the  Bombardier DS650  and downloaded  it to  the "Other ATV"  in the  service manual list.

  I'm  not impressed with it  as  far  as the  ignition system  is concerned..  There is no  timing  mark  for  the  magneto. There  is nothing  stating  where  the  magnet  and  pickup  coil  should be   positioned at  TDC. Just the  gap  is  mentioned.

there is no adjustment on the timing other than the trigger gap. The mag can only be clocked one way, evidently. I clocked it so it appeared as this pic on Ron Wood's site. It now fires up and runs, although it has a significant "cough" every now and then that will kill the engine. Not really sure what's up with that yet.

I am just glad it will start and rev.

well, it is back together and ready for whatever they wish to do with it. I am very grateful for the help from this forum!
The cough was due to the springs falling out of one of the coil wires, I believe. I replaced those pieces and it seems to idle and run very well.

Great  to  learn  you got it  running ok..    I see   with that  picture  it  is the rotor  itself that  is  keyed to the  shaft  and the gear  behind  bolts to  it,  so now  I  know why  there  was  no  mention  of  how it was timed.

Ok guys needs some help asap ready to set this thing on fire..thing would never start valves were tight i adjusted the calves to correct shims on intake n exhaust have plenty of clearance in between cam lobes n shims..problem is i done set tdc about 10 times now its dead on..will not fire one hiccup sprayed gas into carb while cranking n while not all it does is make a loud backfire n some flames come out. Its like valves are tight but there not.idk how it could be firing wrong with it at tdc. I need help asap carn is clean have plenty of spark bright blue.

      I'm trying to help a buddy out with his bike (he's not really on the internet or familiar with these forums) and I'll admit that I am not super familiar with the transmission and clutches in these bikes. I owned a Brute a few years ago, but never had an issue like this that I had to troubleshoot.
      So basically my buddy bought a group lot of 650's to build one good bike out of. He got it all put together and has it running but when he pushes on the throttle the clutch doesn't engage till the RPM's are quite high and even when its moving it doesn't really speed up, almost seems like its in "limp mode". He's tried 2 different transmissions so I don't think that's the problem. 
      Is there any adjustment on the clutch engagement? Anything else I can tell him to look at? Let me know if you need anymore information if you think you can help.

      1st problem, Does anyone know where I can find a stock carb for my Timberwolf, I have tried two different aftermarket carbs and they both suck. The machine runs great until it gets good and warm, then it keeps stalling unless I feather the throttle. it will even stall while I'm trying to go from 1st to reverse or vise versa. I took it to a buddy of mine who is a bike mechanic for years, and he told me try to find a factory carb. When I look online from dealers it says "NOT AVAILABLE" anyone have any suggestions ?
       
      2nd, The small tab on the rear axle for towing is to short for even pulling my small yard trailer, I can't even turn a little bit and hit hits. I tried making an extension which worked great as far as length, but it bends the tab and then the extension drags the ground. I have an idea of what to do to fix it, but wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem and see how you solved it.

      Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

      I’ve got a 2000 400ex with a dg slip on muffler, it came with he stock muffler on it but the previous owner had the dg in a box so I put it on. I’ve been riding it for the past month and a half and every time I let off it backfires, and the other day the backfires got way louder, 2x louder! I’m concerned that I may hurt my motor? Why does is backfire??? Thanks
