I just picked up a 1998 Suzuki ltf 500. It has the full time 4wd. When I test drove it, it felt slower but I didn't think much of it. A few days later i went for a ride around the neighborhood with my buddy. The roads were icy and right after taking off he told me that my rear wheels are not spinning like the fronts do when I give it gas. I didn't hear any weird noises or grinding when driving it that day or when i originally test drove it. I took it home and jacked it up. When in gear the front tires spin, the rear drive shaft spins but the rear tires dont. If I hold the shaft still I can spin the back tires, and vice versa. I suspected that the rear differential was bad. So I drained the rear diff. There wasn't any chunks, or metal in the fluid. And when I spun the tires I could see the rear diff spin inside the case, but didn't see any movement when I spun the drive shaft. My guess right now would be something in the drive shaft or the gear that is between the drive shaft and the differential gear. Looking for some help on this or if anyone has had a similar problem.

There is a coupling between the  drive  shaft for the  rear  differential and the pinion  gear. I suspect  that is broken, or splines stripped  out. I  found the  link  for the  service  manual.  There  is an   exploded view of the assembly in it .

You can download the  pdf  of the  service manual  for your  quad  here:

      Hello All
I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

I like to ride in wooded and grassy areas. It takes my mind off the everyday routines and helps me deal with my father's cancer. Also gives me a reason to get involved with forums like this one.

I bought a 1996 Sportsman 500 4x4 about a month ago, and I love it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a few problems with the high-range gear. The first problem is that the gear selector will intermittently pop out of high and into neutral. This problem will sometimes occur when starting from a stop and sometimes will also occur while at cruising speed. The last time this happened I stopped and put it back into gear, however, as soon as I tried to throttle the machine would die. I turned it on again with no problems put it back into high and it died again. Once again I turned it on with no problems put it into low instead and it worked fine with no problem. I drove in low down the road slowly for a little and then shifted back into high with no issues.
I plan on working on it this weekend and would just like some opinions or feedback from anyone who may have experienced these problems before. I'm very mechanically inclined but im unsure of exactly where to start as this is the first Polaris ATV that I've owned. Any feedback is appreciated and thanks in advance
